First Walk of (hopefully) many! Despite the rain us few intrepid walkers explored the streets today and had some nice conversations about public transit, street furniture, plants, monuments, and making the Piazza D’Italia into the coolest swimming pool!
Ahead of this weeks *inaugural* Walk, wanted to share some very optional readings, videos, etc to situate the themes of the walk a bit. First up, check out “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” by William Whyte, a sociologist who aimed to study how we inhabit public space by closely watching several small parks in Manhattan. The doc is easily findable on YouTube and internet archive. It’s also a book!
Do you have any recs for us to read/watch/listen ahead of our walk?
First Walking Project walk on Saturday, October 4th at 2pm! Let’s collectively explore public spaces of the CBD (monuments, parks, furnitures), think about the politics of these spaces and their potential futures. The walk will be approximately 3 miles round trip from Harmony Circle (Tivoli Circle roundabout on St. Charles).
