The "Unspoken Cost" of Cancer: Episode 2 — The Bionic Receipt
I don’t just talk about healthcare innovation. I carry it in my chest.
This is my Edwards SAPIEN XT heart valve. I was even invited to the Edwards Lifesciences headquarters to meet the engineers who built it. It’s the physical price I paid for surviving 1974 and 1981, and it’s why I’m still standing as the CEO of Walking Miracles Family Foundation.
The Pioneer Story:
In 2013, at age 40, I made medical history at the Cleveland Clinic. I was the youngest candidate for the TAVR clinical trial. While TAVR was designed for the elderly, my team—led by the legendary Dr. Samir Kapadia (Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine) and Dr. Benico Barzilai—knew it was the only way to save a heart "stoned" by 1970s chest radiation.
The Reality Check:
Survival is a decades-long maintenance project.
By 35: I needed my first pacemaker.
The Crisis: My heart was being crushed by 250ml of fluid in my pericardial sac. Later, I survived my lungs filling with 750ml of fluid—a full wine bottle’s worth.
The Specialized Council:
Staying alive required a "Council of Mentors" across state lines:
Dr. Samir Kapadia & Dr. Benico Barzilai (Cleveland Clinic): The global pioneers who used groundbreaking technology to give me a bionic future.
Dr. Mitchell Rashid (CAMC): The frontline guardian in West Virginia whose family has provided the expert surveillance needed to catch "Late Effects" before they become fatal.
Dr. Rachel Hughes-Doichev (AHN): My current Specialized Guardian in Pittsburgh. As a leader in Cardio-Oncology, she manages the complex intersection of my 51-year survival journey and my heart health.
The Mission:
Meeting the team at Edwards reminded me that I am the bridge between the engineers and the patients. At Walking Miracles, we ensure the 0.05% cohort isn't left to navigate these "Late Effects" alone.
The miracle is in the maintenance.
