The album is aptly titled Family Night in tribute to the open jam that Alex lead from ~ 2009 through ~ 2017. Our band was birthed from these community building nights of musical magic so it was only fitting that our debut album bare its name.

I (Ethan) 1st heard tell of Makaya in â09 while living in Amherstâdoing odd jobs for a woman who casually mentioned that her friend (none other than Archie Shepp) knew a Western Massâraised drummer tearing it up in Chicago. That drummer: Makaya. I promptly tracked down his recordings and scored a Cold Duck Complex CD at Turn It Up! in Northampton.
