The Mabinogion brings together eleven of Wales’ most enduring stories, shaped by generations of Welsh storytellers before being written into medieval manuscripts, the White Book of Rhydderch and the Red Book of Hergest. They are among the earliest surviving prose stories in Britain.
Dragons, giants, curses and characters like Bloduwedd and Rhiannon sit at the heart of these tales, where myth and medieval life meet and reveal the imagination that has long shaped Wales.
These stories still resonate today, from the Red Dragon to modern culture and song. This is Wales, where stories carry forward.

Welsh corgis have travelled far. Once known only in one corner of West Wales, they are now recognised around the world as one of Wales’ most famous native breeds.
Bred by Welsh farmers, these dogs were valued for their intelligence, strength and skill with cattle. Their low build helped them move close to livestock while staying clear of kicks. Their name comes from the Welsh, Ci Corrach, meaning Dwarf Dog.
By 1925, the Welsh Corgi Club had formed to protect the breed.
From farm life to global recognition, the corgi carries a story shaped in Wales.

Welsh history lives in the objects people have made, used, and passed on.
The Red Book of Hergest, written by the end of the 14th century, preserves some of the earliest Welsh prose, including stories of Blodeuwedd, Rhiannon and Branwen. A 1573 map, Cambriae Typus, shows Wales as a nation in its own right.
Other objects reveal everyday life and global impact. A cnapan ball recalls a historic Welsh game. A memorial in Fishguard marks Jemima Nicholas capturing French soldiers in 1797. From the Felinfoel beer can in 1935 to the fuel cell first described by William Grove in 1838, Welsh ideas have travelled far.
This is Wales. A nation shaped by creativity, resilience and a strong sense of who we are.

Have you met the Mari Lwyd? A bone horse that moves through Wales in midwinter, dressed in ribbons and carried from house to house with song and rhyme. At each door, verses known as pwnco are exchanged in a playful challenge.
If welcomed inside, the Mari Lwyd brings good luck for the year ahead. First recorded in 1800, this tradition continues to be kept alive today.

The story of Martha Hughes Cannon begins in Wales.
Born in 1857, she left Wales as a child and went on to train as a doctor in the United States, building a career in public health. She became a strong voice for women’s rights and, in 1896, was elected to the Utah Senate, becoming the first female senator in American history.
Her work in office improved the water supply, tackled infectious disease, and supported education and protections for women and girls.
In 2024, she was honoured with a statue in the US Capitol. A life that began in Wales, shaping change far beyond it.

Wales protects what matters. Nearly a quarter of the nation’s land is protected across three national parks and five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, recognised for their ecological and geographical importance.
From Eryri (Snowdonia), home to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), to Pembrokeshire Coast, the UK’s only coastal national park, and Bannau Brycheiniog, home to Wales’ first International Dark Sky Reserve, these landscapes show the depth of Wales’ natural heritage.
Across Gower, Llŷn, Ynys Môn, the Wye Valley, and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, protected places hold wildlife, history and communities shaped over time.
This is Wales.
