Today, I am proud to announce that I am running for Congress. For more than two decades, this community has shaped my life and my purpose. I have fought for civil rights, for working families, for access to quality health care, and for the dignity and opportunity every person deserves—first as an attorney, and now as a councilmember. But this moment calls for more. Our community deserves bold, fearless leadership. A fierce advocate who will stand up, speak out, and fight back—no matter who is in power or what obstacles stand in the way. That is the fighter I have always been, and that is the fighter I will be in Congress. I am running to protect our families, defend our freedoms, and build a future where every child and every neighborhood can thrive. I would be honored to have your support on this journey. Let’s fight for our future—together.

Your voice matters in Prince George’s County. As Councilmember At-Large, I want to hear directly from residents across the entire county about the issues that matter most to you. This survey will help guide our priorities and shape upcoming Town Hall 2026 conversations in communities across Prince George’s County. Whether you live in District 6 or anywhere else in the county, I encourage you to take a few minutes to share your thoughts. Your feedback will help ensure that our work remains people-centered, transparent, and responsive. 📋 Take the community survey here: https://bit.ly/Walaatlarge Thank you for taking the time to participate and for helping shape the future of Prince George’s County. Ready to Serve.

It was an honor to attend the anniversary celebration at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and hear Pastor L.K. Floyd deliver a powerful message about moving forward in Christ — especially during that middle season between your suffering and your breakthrough. His word reminded us to stay faithful, focused, and encouraged even while walking through the process. Thank you for such an inspiring service and warm fellowship. It was also wonderful to see so many community leaders, including Delegate Debra Davis and School Board Member Brenda Thomas. Grateful for the opportunity to worship, reflect, and celebrate together.

It was an honor to meet Congressman Greg Casar and talk about my commitment to joining the Congressional Progressive Caucus and fighting for affordability for working families. From lowering healthcare and housing costs to standing up to corporate influence and protecting workers, we need bold leadership that puts people first. I am ready to bring that fight to Congress and help build an economy that works for everyone — not just the wealthy and well-connected.

It was great to host our Senior Town Hall today and bring together partners from WSSC, Pepco, Erica Turner from the County Executive’s Office, and Secretary Gloria Lawlah to share important resources and information for our seniors. Thank you to the Jetsetters for collaborating with us and helping make this quick but impactful Senior Town Hall possible. Special thanks to Tony Roy for providing the sandwiches and supporting our seniors and community members. These conversations matter, and I remain committed to making sure our seniors stay informed, connected, and supported.

Thank you, Ladi and Oyin Layeni, for hosting such an incredible Meet & Greet and for bringing so many members of our community together in support of this campaign. Your leadership and commitment to uplifting our community helped create a powerful gathering of leaders, business owners, advocates, and residents all committed to the future of Maryland’s 5th Congressional District. The energy in the room made one thing clear: we have momentum. People are ready for leadership that fights for working families, stands up to corporate influence, and delivers real results for our communities. Thank you to everyone who came out, shared your concerns, and showed your support. Together, we are building a people-powered movement, and we are just getting started.

It was an honor to join the Prince George’s County DSA and talk about building a movement for a world that is not committed to billionaires, but to everyday working people. It is time for a Congress that does not just talk about change, but takes action to make it happen. From lowering costs and expanding healthcare to protecting workers and standing up to corporate influence, we need leadership that puts people first. Together, we can build a government that works for all of us — not just the wealthy and well-connected.

Our communities have put their lives on the line for voting rights. But Trump and MAGA Republicans are demolishing that progress before our very eyes. Maryland deserves leadership that defends the ability for ALL people to participate in American democracy. I’m running for Congress to fight back against the Trump administration’s assault on our democratic freedoms. Join our movement at walablegay.com. We need ALL HANDS ON DECK to win this election. Volunteer or donate today!

It was an honor to join the NAMI Walk today, especially alongside my sorors and so many community advocates committed to healing and hope. Mental health is a critical issue in our communities, and we must continue breaking the stigma, increasing access to care, and ensuring people know they are not alone. Too many families are struggling in silence, and now more than ever, we need compassion, resources, and real investment in mental health services. Thank you to everyone who came out to walk, support, and raise awareness. Together, we can build healthier and stronger communities.

It was an honor to join Councilmember Hunter for a development meeting where we provided updates on the Sprouts coming to Westphalia and discussed other important projects throughout Largo, Westphalia, and Upper Marlboro. These conversations are critical as we continue working to bring quality development, economic investment, grocery access, and new opportunities to our communities while ensuring residents remain informed and engaged every step of the way. I look forward to continuing to collaborate to deliver smart growth and meaningful progress for our region.

At a time when voting rights are under attack across the country, we must make it easier — not harder — for our people to vote. People fought, marched, and sacrificed so we could have the right to vote. Now it is our responsibility to protect that right and remove barriers at the ballot box. That is why I am supporting my Election Day bill to make it easier for people to take time off and vote in November. It is time to fight hard for our people — and for our democracy.

It was an honor to attend Bike to Work Day today and support the importance of transit-oriented communities. As we continue building stronger and more connected communities, we must invest in transportation options that make it easier, safer, and healthier for residents to get to work, school, and daily activities. Bike to Work Day is another reminder that transit-oriented communities need the support and infrastructure to thrive — from safer bike lanes and walkable neighborhoods to reliable public transportation and smart growth planning. Together, we can create communities that are sustainable, accessible, and built for the future.
