We had a great turnout at Laurel Hills Community Center last night as we heard from James Wilkes from the Ashe County Beekeepers Association! He introduced his app, @hivetracks , which is a fantastic way to keep up with your bees - all in one place! It’s a FREE app, so definitely take the time to download it today, if you haven’t already.
Not every day, but some days, you get to be part of something much bigger than yourself. Today, in conjunction with the @wakecountybeeks , Johnston County NC Beekeepers Association, @gardensupplyco and more, we received 43 nuc boxes that passed their state inspection and will be taken back to Western North Carolina around 5AM tomorrow morning. This effort was organized by the @ncstateapiculture program with an effort to help beekeepers from the Ashe County Beekeepers Association in Ashe County who experienced a devastating amount of honeybee loss as a direct result of Hurricane Helene. Twenty nuc boxes have already been delivered a few weeks ago, more hives will be inspected tomorrow, and we will have more hives going up in June. Our ultimate goal was 100, and we will be just shy of that number. A HUGE thank you to everyone who made this possible! Every nuc box of honeybees is worth ~$200. Such a generous and monumental effort and we could have never pulled off something like this by ourselves. It just goes to show you the magnitude of what can be accomplished when you work together!
Ready to win one of TWO complete hives with a full colony of bees? If so, enter our RAFFLE to benefit the NCSU Endowed Professorship in Apiculture! You don’t need to be present to win and you can purchase your tickets online at our website by going to the link in our bio! Swipe right to see the two beautifully decorated hives!
Drawing to be held at our June 11th membership meeting.
Stay tuned for TONIGHT! Our meeting starts at 7pm and we will get to hear from Dana Delaney about Swarm Catching and at 7:30 we will get to hear from Steve Amerige! Steve Amerige is an NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer of Wake County, an NCSU graduate student in Horticulture, a featured author in the Triangle Gardener magazine, a beekeeper, and a Distinguished Software Developer at SAS Institute. Steve is a regular speaker at libraries, garden clubs, businesses, and many other venues on science-based horticulture and gardening topics.
We are so excited to hear from him! See you tonight!
When: April 09, 2024 7:00 PM, EDT
Where: Wake County Commons Building, 4011 Carya Dr, Raleigh, NC 27610
It was a PACKED HOUSE yesterday as we learned from Tony (thank you for stepping in for Greg!) about varroa mite control and the various methods you can use to test for them in your hive. Thank you for joining us & we hope you enjoyed your complimentary mite sampling kit! If you couldn’t make it to this meeting, we hope you can join us for the next one in April! 🐝
Hello & welcome to the official Wake County Beekeepers Association instagram page! Today we would like to highlight Greg Morrison, who will be our presenter this upcoming Tuesday, March 12th at 7pm! Join us to hear more about Greg and how he got started in beekeeping. His presentation is an introduction to the arch enemy of our honey bee, the Varroa Mite and is geared towards the beginning beekeeper. This talk is designed to ultimately help new beekeepers develop management and treatment plans with a goal of keeping mite counts low so the honey bees they keep will survive and thrive.
We are ALSO having a Swap Shop - Buy, Sell, or Give Away at 6:30pm. Please note that only current 2024 members may sell or trade. Anyone can purchase or take advantage of give aways. Bee equipment/ tools, garden items, and similar are welcome. If successful, we hope to have this
twice a year.
We hope to see you there!
