Murphy wants a ban on cellphone use in grades K-12 for all public schools in the state.
“Today, our children are inundated with screens,” the governor said during his annual speech, delivered to a joint session of the state Legislature at the Statehouse in Trenton.
“And if you ask just about any educator, they will tell you that mobile devices are a distraction in the classroom. They are fueling a rise in cyberbullying. And they are making it incredibly difficult for our kids, not only to learn, but to retain the substance of what they learn.”
“So today, I am officially announcing my support for a new proposal that will direct school districts across New Jersey to adopt policies that ban cellphones from our K-12 classrooms and help establish phone-free schools.”
Summit Public Schools PTO Boards Present: Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age
Please join the Summit Public Schools PTO Boards for a presentation of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age on Wednesday, 1/29 in the Summit High School Auditorium. Movie begins promptly at 7pm and runs about an hour. Doors open at 6:45pm.
Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston explores the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to examine the common struggles we face over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.
We hope this movie can be a resource for those who are on the cusp of purchasing a phone for their child or if your child is already asking for one.
Children are welcome to attend the screening with an adult. We recommend 4th grade and up.
@summitdcp 👏🏽 check out the new “no smartphones” policy for kids younger than 8th grade at our community programs. The goal is simple: help children focus on the joys of real-life connections, play, and creativity. We hope you'll support us helping our kids unplug during their early years.
This year’s My Cause, My Cleats game is in the books ✅ Stay tuned, my game-worn sneakers will be auctioned off through @goldinco . Net proceeds benefit my local @waituntil8th , who help families maintain healthy relationships with technology. More info coming soon!
What if we told you there was a simple solution to help kids be kids? To give them more time to explore, play and learn? To flip the script on peer pressure? It's called @waituntil8th and you can join the movement sweeping Summit (and the nation!) by signing the pledge to wait on giving your child a smartphone. Link in bio.
For this season’s My Cause, My Cleats game, my shoes will represent Wait Until 8th. @WaitUntil8th is a pledge @alli.kafka and I have made to wait to give our kids a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade. This year’s design was inspired, in collaboration with our kids, by one of our favorite video games/movies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After this weekend’s game, I’ll be auctioning my game-worn shoes with @goldinco and 100% of proceeds will go to @waituntil8th . Stay tuned for auction details!
