I think it’s time I properly introduced myself...
My name is Wae Messed. I am a Costume Designer and Performance Artist. For the purpose of this introduction, let’s focus on my costumes.
I have been running La Cocina solo for 15 years, since 2009. I was taught to sew by my Nana and my Abuelita at 5 years old after they both saw my passion for it at a young age. I am forever grateful to them for taking the time to recognize and the initiative to teach me. It has been an endless gift.
I have been designing clothing from my earliest memories. I have a lifetime of notebooks and journals full of designs. Growing up, I used to give all my friends makeovers and orchestrate crazy dress-ups for slumber parties. I have always loved creating a look.
I value my individuality and love to provide that for my clients as well. I predominantly create one-of-a-kind designs. There is no better feeling than having a custom, tailor-made garment that no one else will ever have. I love creating a look for you that is all yours.
In the movie, “Like Water for Chocolate,” Tita infuses her emotions into her food. In a similar way, I give everything to my work. From start-to-finish, I truly cherish each moment I have with a costume piece. I pour my heart and soul into each piece I create.
For me this is about more than simply sewing, it is to carry-on a legacy from the women in the generations before me. To finish the work that they started. It is me and my ancestors behind me. Not just a passion, but a calling.
