Merchants of Song Wat collaborate with Harvard University through an international exchange conference. Following its presentation at @bangkokdesignweek , the Merchants of Song Wat board game and artist collective were invited to be featured at the Harvard Undergraduates in Asia Program (HUAP) @huapbkk Spring Program 2026, an international cultural exchange conference connecting students from Harvard University @harvard and partner universities across Asia. Under the 2026 theme “Catalyst for Change: Interdisciplinary Approaches for One Shared Future,” the project contributed to the conference dialogue through the subthemes Culture and Belonging and Empowerment through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Originally developed as a site-specific installation and playable board game during Bangkok Design Week, Merchants of Song Wat explores the historic trading district of Song Wat Road, translating local heritage into an interactive experience. Through gameplay, participants step into the role of merchants navigating trade, resources, and partnerships — reflecting both the historical spirit of Thai commerce and contemporary ideas of sustainability and community-driven development. It was a pleasure for our artist collective to share this project with the Harvard University community. Presented during Bangkok Design Week 2026, Merchants of Song Wat transformed the historic Song Wat Road into a life-size playable board game and immersive art installation. Inspired by the district’s trading heritage and the story of Tuk Khaek, the exhibition invited visitors to step into the role of merchants—trading goods, and navigating the rhythms of commerce that shaped the neighbourhood. Through game mechanics, textiles, light, sound, and spatial installation, the work reinterpreted local history as a participatory cultural experience. The project was made possible through the collaboration of the artist collective, the Song Wat community, Play Art House, and Made in Song Wat. We are grateful to our partners and supporters, including the United Nations Development Programme Thailand UNDP, the European Union, PASAYA Lifestyle and partnership businesses, who helped bring the project to life.
