A new update has just been added to the Particle FX Workshop:
Blade Erosion FX
In this project, we create a complete shot from scratch of a blade peeling away through dark, high-tech energy to reveal a corrupted version underneath.
The update covers:
- advanced particle workflows through VEX
- vellum peeling and disintegration effects
- custom procedural masks through instancing
- advanced look development and compositing techniques
This update is completely free for everyone already enrolled in the workshop.
And if you’ve been thinking about joining, the Spring Sale is currently live with 20% off all courses until May 12.
New tutorial out! Better pyro control in Houdini. Available on our youtube channel
One common issue with continuous emissions is velocity buildup. Over time, simulations can become overly aggressive and harder to art direct. In this tutorial, I break down a simple but powerful technique to counter that behavior.
You’ll learn how to:
• Prevent unwanted velocity accumulation in pyro sims
• Use Gas Damp as a counter-force to gradually remove excess motion
• Maintain cleaner, more controlled fire and smoke behavior while preserving your source
This is a quick, practical tip that can make a big difference in how predictable and directable your simulations feel.
**Spring Sale soon! 5th - 12th May - Don't miss it!**
Last day for Cinematic Ocean FX in Houdini 🔥
Build epic ocean simulations from the ground up in Houdini.
Learn everything needed from the basics of volumes, building custom flip solvers, to shaping waves, directing splashes, and combining it all to create powerful cinematic water FX shots.
Last 3 days for Cinematic Ocean FX in Houdini:
• Master FLIP Fundamentals
• Art direct whitewater
• Properly mesh fluids
• Advanced control (density, divergence, viscosity)
Now is the best time to enroll
Avoid treating viscosity in FLIP as a constant.
By introducing temperature-based viscosity, you can vary how your fluid behaves across the simulation.
Hotter areas → more fluid and energetic
Cooler areas → thicker and more resistant
This gives you much more control over motion:
• Sharper or softer splashes
• Controlled energy dissipation
• Better contrast between calm and turbulent regions
It’s a simple change, but it can completely shift how believable and art-directable your sims feel.
Better FLIP sims are about control, not adding more detail. We can break it in 3 different factors that control overall motion:
• Air incompressibility → more stable motion
• Varying density → different behavior across the sim
• Divergence → added energy and expansion
Small changes, big impact on realism.
