How we made the spinning paint reel and how I almost entirely F*ed it up 😉
Step 1: paint painting and film it overhead (be sure not to move camera or canvas and keep light consistent)
Step 2: Edit out clips with paintbrush in it. Use quick clips of the progressive paint swipes in “stop motion” to look like the painting is moving
Step 3: Somehow film self overhead lying on green screen (to eventually superimpose onto stop motion paint video).
Step 3 is where it all went wrong…🫠 Truth is, I am a pro music-maker and an absolute amateur filmmaker. So, often, the visual component of music marketing is a significant challenge for me, and it doesn’t always work out as one envisions 😂😅 That said, I don’t regret trying and failing because, as with everything, you learn, you grow, and you become more capable of your ambitious visions going forward.
If you’re interested in the nitty grittiez, here’s what VV did wrong:
To use greenscreen quick “keying” techniques, the light must be even on the screen (so no shadows from sunlight or fabric wrinkles); it was when I first laid down around 12pm, and really wasn’t by the time I realized I’d filmed all the shots with my feet cut off, moved around the sheet, not realized the sun moved behind a tree. Cool 😎🫠
So, it took much trickier “rotoscoping” (+ other efforts to compensate for imperfect edges and an unconvincing blend) instead by myself and my SFX Fiverr Aabrar to salvage this concept, barely 😋
