Some personal news: I’m not asking for your vote to be Cambridge’s next Mayor.  Here’s the problem though — no one is. It’s time we changed that. You can add your name to the petition via the link in my bio to part of the effort 🎥 @bonni.jin

I’m Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler, and I’m running for reelection to Cambridge City Council. I’ve lost reelection before, so we’re not taking anything for granted. We’ve got less than a week left to get over the finish line—>you can join us at bdsa.us/knock-4-jivan 🎥 @bonni.jin

MASSACHUSETTS: WE ENDED FORCED BROKER FEES!! 🎉 “Earlier this week, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a measure effectively barring landlords from requiring that apartment tenants pay broker fees — a much-loathed local custom that is, at this point, basically unique to Massachusetts. And on Wednesday, Governor Maura Healey said she’d sign it into law, to take effect Aug. 1.” —@bostonglobe Many housing advocates have worked on this issue far before I have. In a video last year celebrating @chiosse ’s victory in banning forced brokers’ fees in New York City, @zohrankmamdani ’s shouted out the fact Massachusetts remained the only major place left in the country where the practice remained legal. As a renter, that’s when I thought to myself — We can’t let New York beat us! I’m incredibly grateful to City Councilors @votejivan , @enriquepepen , @willieforsomerville for collaborating with me on our first video project last fall, and for their leadership in passing resolutions in their respective municipalities calling for a ban on forced brokers’ fees. At the State House, thank you to @electerika , @statesenatorlydiaedwards , @team.tram , Rep. Tackey Chan, and @sabadosama for your leadership and including this important issue in the state budget. And finally, thank you to @massgovernor for your early commitment to enacting this into law. As all of us say in the video: the fight for just housing in Massachusetts is far from over! We’re excited to keep fighting for more.

Our own BDSA elected @votejivan was featured in @jacobinmag today! Jivan responds to corporate democrat Jake Auchincloss's claim that "with housing, the problem is mostly the government." Jivan explains the root of the housing crisis in Massachusetts are what Democratic Socialists in Cambridge and beyond are doing about it. 🌹

Incredible experience to meet @AOC and our very own @AyannaPressley with @votejivan yesterday. Running for office as a democratic socialist is an intense, challenging, and at times isolating experience, especially as candidates of color. We run in service of our deep belief in and commitment to building a movement. And we are often the first to be publicly dragged within our movements for navigating the failures of a broken system we are trying to transform. It was extra special to meet with @aoc and @ayannapressley and capture this moment with @votejivan because we all know this work takes immense perseverance, and I cannot imagine the experience with national media and immense attention. Thank you all for your resilience and inspiring so many of us. 💜

Councillor Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler, a vocal advocate of the transfer fee, said he thinks an enabling act like the one Healey proposed is the city’s best bet for getting the transfer fee authorized by the state. “Cambridge’s home rule petition is one way the city can help keep attention and pressure on the issue, and I’m glad we moved forward with it last night,” Sobrinho-Wheeler told Cambridge Day via email. If the legislature advances the fee, Cambridge could place up to a 2 percent tax on the value of real estate transactions above $1 million. Revenue raised by the fee would go towards funding affordable housing throughout the city
