MASSACHUSETTS: WE ENDED FORCED BROKER FEES!! 🎉
“Earlier this week, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a measure effectively barring landlords from requiring that apartment tenants pay broker fees — a much-loathed local custom that is, at this point, basically unique to Massachusetts. And on Wednesday, Governor Maura Healey said she’d sign it into law, to take effect Aug. 1.” —

Many housing advocates have worked on this issue far before I have. In a video last year celebrating
@chiosse ’s victory in banning forced brokers’ fees in New York City,
@zohrankmamdani ’s shouted out the fact Massachusetts remained the only major place left in the country where the practice remained legal. As a renter, that’s when I thought to myself — We can’t let New York beat us!
I’m incredibly grateful to City Councilors
@votejivan ,
@enriquepepen ,
@willieforsomerville for collaborating with me on our first video project last fall, and for their leadership in passing resolutions in their respective municipalities calling for a ban on forced brokers’ fees. At the State House, thank you to
@electerika ,
@statesenatorlydiaedwards ,
@team.tram , Rep. Tackey Chan, and
@sabadosama for your leadership and including this important issue in the state budget. And finally, thank you to
@massgovernor for your early commitment to enacting this into law.
As all of us say in the video: the fight for just housing in Massachusetts is far from over! We’re excited to keep fighting for more.
