Meet our 2025-2026 DAG Artist in Residence! Greg Weaver makes analog and digital media meditating on history, power, politics, and culture. His art-making practice materializes from curiosity and reflection. It blends research with intuitive association of text and images, composing audio/visual theories on how to center and honor Black life, and what happens or could happen within such a frame. His visual vernacular is informed by a lineage of Black southern living, hip-hop music, skateboarding, comics, Toonami, and other sci-fi/fantasy media. Greg seeks to honor his inner child, pay homage to his influences and inheritances, and do propaganda for a more liberated world. Esoderic (our @theblackonblackproject AIR) is a photographer, griot, and aspiring Speech Language Pathologist. Above all, he’s an adventurous, critical Black boy navigating a complex world. He finds beauty internally through self portraits. He captures beauty externally through landscape street photography and documentary style photography of the community. His ultimate goal is to achieve peace and express all forms of himself. Whether it’s his advocacy for human rights, his career in communication, or his love for a variety of topics, he wants to see himself and all Black people, freely express themselves. We’re so excited to see the work these two artists bring to DAG and our community!

Had a fantastic evening last night at Durham’s Third Friday Art event at Golden Belt Campus. I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people and the two conversations that stick out in my mind most are those with Greg @voodustyle and Marvin @macfa_studio (also Tiffany Coley! She is my favorite local jewelry artist and I recently wore her earrings during a photo shoot) Greg is an artist and teacher/librarian - he is a “meaning-maker” and teaches kids these skills (which basically makes him a superhero in my book). His exhibit brought together collage, film, books and writing in a way that invited reflection and a hunger to learn more. Growing up among towers of books myself I could connect with his love of resources and nimble ability to make lateral connections between concepts that at first may seem strangers to each other. I really want to see where this guy’s passion takes him! I also had the pleasure of spending time with the thoughtful and talented Marvin Cook @macfa_studio , who is pictured here with one of his landscapes of the Eno river. Marvin has an exciting idea to present images of nature through different lenses in his work and I won’t say more but I have no doubt it will be beautiful and compelling work. We talked about how being an artist isn’t a profession per se, it’s more like something in your skin, in your body (are we our own species??) and that is difficult for many people to understand. And for artists, balancing this visceral identity with the practicalities of trying to make it a viable career financially frequently creates internal conflict and can be very frustrating and demoralizing. It can feel strange to cast such a private part of yourself into the commercial world, but it is necessary. We also talked about the importance of being actively involved in the artist community with Tiffany who helped to curate some of the studio shows! All in all it was a great evening and I am glad I crawled out from under my rock and scrubbed (most of) the paint off of my hands to attend. Looking forward to next Month’s third Friday when I’ll be back!!!

This show is a collaborative space that invites you to read, think, and respond to the materials and questions behind my research project. I look forward to bringing our experiences together in what I hope is a rehearsal for democratic dialogue and process.

hey y’all! this is Greg Weaver and I’m a 2025-26 Artist in Residence here at DAG. I’m a librarian and multimedia artist based here in Durham. Welcome to my Sunday takeover! My upcoming show, Embodied Literacy and Freedom Dreams, is coming this month. This is constellation of personal study, global print/digital media artifacts, original video, archival material, and skate culture. It invites us into a way of reading the world we’ve inherited in order to write a new one into being together through collective, democratic struggle against oppressive forces. Details to come soon! I’m excited to share space and have dialogue about the society we want instead of constantly consuming the doom online.
