You might not be aware of this, but many of our past releases have come, not from our research alone, but from your recommendations and submissions: like VTC Tank Man, VTC Tatsuro, and more. Vocal Type wouldn't have come this far without you, for so many reasons. So, if there's an activist, cause, culture, protest, or movement you would like to see become a future font family, please let us know. It would be a pleasure to hear from you. . In the meantime, here's a quick update of what we're looking into or are interested in. First off, a few years back, we made some custom accent marks for VTC Martin to be used by the Māori Party in New Zealand. So naturally, we would love to collaborate with any there to make a font family inspired by their protest history. . We're looking at banners from an Anti-Apartheid march organized by Desmond Tutu, an archbishop who used his position to advocate for international pressure and economic sanctions against the apartheid government. . Lastly, we're working on a font family inspired by the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, which was a non-violent military overthrow of a dictator, after which both the military and civilian celebrated with parades and streets filled with hand-painted banners. . More to come!

Hey everyone, I'm back with more of the inspiration behind VTC Wii. Specifically around the Women's Rights Movements Dolle Mina and Wij Vrouwen Eisen (We Women Demand). . I think the most surprising find throughout this research process was discovering a photograph from Dolle Mina's first anniversary demonstration, where Angela Davis was a speaker. . But you can learn all about that and more on our website. Many more movements and citations to come. Thanks!

Back at it with more of the history and references that inspired VTC Wij, as a part of our year long collaboration with @graphicmatters . . We started off with Anton de Kom and his legacy, which inspired us to look at a broader postwar history of protest in the Netherlands. . Here we move from Anton de Kom on anti-colonial and migration struggles and dive into the history of Indonesia and Suriname's fight for independence, along with the fight for civil rights for those living in the Netherlands. . More to come!

In case you missed it, we've recently released a new font family called VTC Wij, built around our year-long, multi-project collaboration with @graphicmatters . In 2025, Graphic Matters, a Breda, Netherlands-based design organization, invited us to participate in a multi-project collaboration rooted in Dutch postwar protest history. Together, we developed CHARACTERS: Voices in Type, a project that unfolded across a mural, a protest sign-making curriculum for secondary school students, an exhibition, a Koppermaandag publication, a one-day conference, and the typeface VTC WJ. The project began with Anton de Kom, a writer, resistance fighter, and anti-colonial activist whose work became an early reference point in Dutch colonial and resistance history. His grandson was among the more than sixty volunteers who painted the 105-me-ter mural in Breda where VTC Wij first appeared. Much more to come on the collaboration and the stories behind VTC Wij. Thanks!

As a part of our year long collaboration with @graphicmatters , VTC Wij draws from multiple liberation movements across Dutch postwar history. However; it began with one man: Anton de Kom. Anton de Kom was a Surinamese writer, resistance fighter, and anti-colonial activist whose 1934 book Wij slaven van Suriname was the first history of slavery and Dutch colonialism written from a Surinamese perspective. He died in a German concentration camp in 1945. For decades, his work remained largely unknown outside Surinamese-Dutch communities. This is his story, and the starting point for VTC Wij. More to come on both VTC Wij and the collaboration.

I'm back, with what's probably our largest update in quite a white. In 2025, Graphic Matters, a Breda, Netherlands-based design organization, invited us to participate in a multi-project collaboration rooted in Dutch postwar protest history. Together, we developed CHARACTERS: Voices in Type, a project that unfolded across a mural, a protest sign-making curriculum for secondary school students, an exhibition, a Koppermaandag publication, a one-day conference, and the typeface VTC Wij (Dutch for "We"). VTC Wij draws from protest movements including Indonesian in-dependence, LGBTQ rights, Dolle Mina, Wij Vrouwen Eisen, the squatters' movement, Surinamese independence, anti-nuclear protest, and Black Lives Matter, among others. While VTC Wij is available now on our site, much more on the full history and our work with @graphicmatters and @builtbycivilization to come. Thanks!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and new year. As 2026 begins, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on 2025. . In total honesty, 2025 was a tough year. For us, our family, our industry, and you know the rest. However, it was also a very necessary and meaningful year. In the absence of client work came an abundance of clarity regarding our vision for the future. . After 4 years (2020-24) of moving a million miles an hour, I never had the opportunity to sit with and think about what I want Vocal Type to fully be, what our identity looks like, what does a more expansive website look like, what do I actually want to build. This year provided me the opportunity to figure all of that out. While this is a much longer story, I'm proud to share some of the work we've done this year. . And this July, I'm looking forward to celebrating 10 years of Vocal Type! More to come.

I don't know where the time has gone. It's already two years since releasing VTC Tré on my 30th birthday, and ever since I find myself checking to see if it still looks and feels me, because I don't know who that is in the mirror with grey patches of hair. . But I digress. Just wanted to celebrate by taking a moment to thank everyone who has made my passion project turned dream job a reality. Vocal Type wouldn't be here without you, so thank you. . Thank you.

A tad late with the post after this long holiday weekend, but I am extremely excited to announce that the all new VTC Martin Display is now available. And in case you missed, so is the larger VTC Martin family, only at VocalType.co . Thanks for the support, and much more to come.

Arriving on the 62nd anniversary of Dr. King's infamous _I Have A Dream_ speech, I am proud to announce the upcoming release of VTC Martin Display. Unlike the VTC Martin font family that was released this June, VTC Martin Display remains closer to the original typeface released in 2016—bold in its uppercase, lighter in its lowercase—while also expanding to include variable italics. More to come!

Hey everyone, I'm back with more on the all new VTC Martin font family. This time we're diving into the discovering and development of the punctuation marks—from how we discovered them to how we adapted them for the font family. We go through a few examples set in VTC Martin XBold, but be sure to check out some of the other weights on our site. Hope you enjoy the read, and more to come!
