MCP 2.0, what’s your vision? In PLAN 601 we envisioned what the MCP program could look like in its next edition with a world cafe and graphic facilitation. The class put our heads together to think about what makes the program special, what’s working well, and if there are any areas for growth.
🎉We had our year end barbecue over the weekend to celebrate the second years who are defending and the first years who have just completed year 1! Thank you to our hosts and everyone who helped to make it a success. 🎉
Great work to Anton, Nikkitta and Priyen for presenting their research at CREATE 2025!!! 3 students. 3 theses. 3 minutes. Congratulations Nikkitta for taking home the Peoples Choice Award!!!
Our second year’s field trip to Victoria: a day of learning and exploration! 🌱 We started at Mustard Seed Food Distribution Centre, gaining insight into food security and the growing role of food banks and hubs. Then, we visited Dockside Green, one of the most sustainable communities with a focus on energy efficiency and livability. 🏙️ Next, we stopped by the Victoria Native Friendship Centre to learn about their services supporting both the urban Indigenous population and the broader community. 🙌 Finally, we met Dr. Mico Botanzo, Sr. Planner for the City of Victoria, and learned about the rich history of Chinatown and ongoing efforts to preserve Chinese culture. 🏮
This week’s exercise in our Indigenous Planning course showed us the power of connection. We took on different roles—from youth leaders to municipal planners to Elders—and passed yarn to one another, illustrating how all parts of the community are interwoven. Each role, each person, plays a crucial part in addressing community needs and building sustainable solutions. As we prepare our Reconciliation Action Plan, we’re reminded that true reconciliation is about collaboration, respect, and shared responsibility.
As part of our Citizens Participation and Consultation class assignment, our MCP second years had the chance to engage with the @viuniversity community! We gathered valuable feedback on safety, culture, housing, and campus life. Excited to apply these insights!
Celebrating Park(ing) Day in downtown Nanaimo! Huge thanks to Hannah for organizing this amazing event and the MCPSA team for helping with set up! It was fantastic to see our both our cohorts come together to create and showcase art, both from our class art day and individual submissions. The collaborative art opportunity on site truly brought our community to life! Grateful for everyone’s creativity and participation! 🎨🖼️🖌️📸📽️
If you didn’t know, Park(ing) Day is an annual event that transforms parking spaces into temporary parks, encouraging communities to rethink the use of public space. It’s a celebration of creativity and community engagement, highlighting the need for more green spaces in urban areas.
