Thomas, a senior defender from Campbell River with VIU men’s soccer, wins this award for the second time (2024) in his varsity career. A Bachelor of Kinesiology student, Thomas led the Mariners in average GPA over the past three semesters and has posted stellar grades during his years at VIU—all while splitting his time between the soccer pitch and the ski slopes. Thomas was also recognized with the 2026 Reid Davidson Award as an unsung hero for VIU men’s soccer.

Congratulations to Charlie Smith: 2025 PACWEST men’s soccer all-star!
The 2024 conference rookie of the year had a stellar second season for the Mariners. Charlie finished third in conference goals and was second on the team in shots and shots on goal. He was tireless as a striker, an offensive threat in the air, and a composed finisher at the penalty spot. Humble and coachable, Charlie has solidified himself as a top forward at the collegiate level.

Congratulations to Maxwell Dadzie: VIU men’s soccer athlete of the week!
The VIU midfielder created many chances for the Mariners over a high-pressure final weekend of regular season play. Always in the middle of the action, Maxwell helped the Mariners fire 17 shots towards Capilano’s goal on Saturday and he led the Mariners with five shot attempts on Sunday. He also provided a perfect cross from a free kick that resulted in VIU’s goal at Douglas. Head coach Kevin Lindo credited Maxwell’s “huge effort” and noted that he fought till the very end in both matches.

Congratulations to Joseph Hare-Goss: VIU men’s soccer athlete of the week!
Hare-Goss has been a dependable and stabilizing presence on the VIU backline in his first season with the black, white, and blue. He put in big minutes against the top-seeded Falcons this weekend and on Saturday, his pressure on a Langara turnover directly led to VIU’s first goal of the game. Whether marking top opposition forwards, creating chaos from long throw-ins, or showing composure during heated games, Hare-Goss’s versatility has been a key part of VIU’s effort down the stretch. Head coach Kevin Lindo noted Joseph’s fine play, crediting his “very solid displays leading from the back” and “composure starting attacks.”

Earlier this preseason, the VIU Mariners Men’s Soccer team traveled to Alert Bay to work with Indigenous youth through the Indigenous Athletics Academy, led by our assistant coach and VIU alum Mateo Kostering of the Namgis Nation.
Through coaching, mentorship, and shared experiences, this trip was about more than soccer — it was about giving back, opening doors to post-secondary opportunities, and walking together on the path of reconciliation.
