We will be following the hypothesis that Maps, diagrams, symbols and other visual representations don’t just show reality — they structure perception, produce knowledge and reinforce –or challenge – power.
We’ve just finished the conception phase and are excited about the next steps.

Day 1 of Unarchiving Architecture opened with Session I, “Practices and Methods.” The session began with an introduction to the chair’s multi-year research project and platform, presented by Professor @mariamissoufouk together with the chair’s research team.
This was followed by a series of expert inputs exploring alternative approaches to architectural knowledge production, including contributions from @emilieapp from @ercwowa , @unfolding_something@delanyboutkan@stefaniekorrel from Collecting Otherwise @nieuweinstituut , and @danielle_rosales_official@visual.intelligence . The discussion set the stage for the workshop by reflecting on methods of documenting, interpreting, annotating and expanding architectural archives.

Unarchiving in Practice
In partnership with the gta Archives, and with contributions from Collecting Otherwise, Visual Intelligence, and Women Writing Architecture, the first day takes the form of a hands-on workshop focused on selected photographic collections.
Invited participants will work with architectural images produced in former colonial contexts, examining both how these materials circulate within archival systems and how they can be recontextualised through collective reading, visual speculation, and discussion. The workshop foregrounds unarchiving as a situated, collaborative practice that critically engages questions of access, authorship, and visibility.
End of 2025 marks 5 years of Visual Intelligence.
Entering 2026 we’re grateful for the people, collaborations, and projects that shaped this studio.
2026 is already taking form — from knowledge communication and research platforms to publications and shared infrastructures.

We were part of the research project “Massenmedium Bilderbogen,” which digitized 500 illustrated broadsheets from the Stadtmuseum Berlin.
The project investigated how historical material can be critically examined, annotated, contextualized, and made accessible.
In this framework we developed with our project partner the polyscope editor — a potential extension of museum databases. By combining strategies such as irritating, highlighting, annotating, and relating, the editor contributes to forms of knowledge production that move beyond static cataloguing and enable layered perspectives, new relations, critical reflexion and shifting interpretations.

Nach Jahrzehnten des zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements für Straßenumbenennungen machen sieben neue Gedenkstelen in Berlin-Wedding die neuen Namensgeber*innen und ihr Wirken als antikoloniale Widerstandskämpfer*innen sichtbar.
📍 Der Manga-Bell-Platz ehrt Rudolf Duala Manga Bell (1873–1914) und Emily Duala Manga Bell (1881–1936). Gemeinsam leisteten sie Widerstand gegen koloniale Vertreibung und Gewalt. Ihr Wirken lieferte wichtige Impulse für spätere Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen in Kamerun.

Von 2020 bis 2024 hat DEKOLONIALE Memory Culture in the City unter der Gesamtkoordination von @annakoma in Berlin neue Wege erprobt, wie eine verantwortungsvolle, sensible und kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Kolonialismus und seinen Folgen im Kulturbereich gestaltet werden kann.
Visual Intelligence begleitete das Projekt unter der Leitung von @danielle_rosales_official von 2020 bis 2025 mit dem Ziel, die normative Kraft von Gestaltung kritisch zu hinterfragen und hierfür visuelle Strategien sowie Konzepte für Kommunikation, Kartografie und visuelle Repräsentation zu entwickeln.
Wir freuen uns, diese Ansätze, Strategien und Prototypen in der Abschlusspublikation gemeinsam neben vielen weiteren spannenden und wichtigen Beiträgen verstetigt zu haben. Das Buch ist im @falschrum_books erhältlich.
Darüber hinaus haben wir (Team: Alisa Vershbitskaya, Miriam Seith und Seda Maden) auch die Gestaltung der 600 Seiten starken Publikation übernommen – unter der Redaktionsleitung der großartigen Melissa Makele. Die Gestaltung umfasst Essays, Kurzbeiträge, Biografien, Kartografie und viele weitere Textformen.#
