For more than a century, the Witch of Yazoo's grave has been the subject of countless ghost stories, the centerpiece of many a teenage dare. To this day, pilgrims make their way to the cemetery to pay their respects, or perhaps to ponder the tale that has captured the imaginations of an entire town and beyond. Today marks 120 year since the booming town of Yazoo City burst into flames in 1904. On the morning of May 25, 1904, a fire started in downtown Yazoo City which burned nearly every business and church, as well as many residences. 324 buildings were destroyed by the time the fire was out that evening. The insurance damages totaled over one million dollars, which in today's economy would equal about $35,230,112.36. Many theories evolved as to how the #YazooCity #fireof1904 started, but we know where. The strange and fierce winds that were blowing on that fateful day also have led many to blame the Witch of Yazoo. Eye-witnesses stated that the flames flew through the air driven by forceful winds setting ablaze structures 3 blocks away! This is one of the eeriest facts of our legend considering the area weather reports from #NWS for May 25, 1904, made no record of high winds in Yazoo. The community pulled together after the fire, and our Main Street was rebuilt within a year (this time without wooden awnings). The uniformity of construction of these buildings helped lead to the area's placement on the National Register of Historic Places...the largest area to be added at the time. You can read more about the correlation of the Witch of Yazoo and the Great Fire of 1904 here: /witch-of-yazoo/
