«Halfdan, an Oslo resident, thinks Oslo is too easy and too available 😄. Well, that’s a whole different perspective on Oslo. What do you think?» 😁 #oslo #visitoslo Produced by @newslab.no@visitoslo

What else is essential? Wake up early on 17th May because this is not the day to sleep in. Put on your bunad or the nicest outfit you own. Start the morning with a fancy breakfast: strawberries, champagne, fresh bread, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, friends everywhere, and someone already posting “Gratulerer med dagen!” at 8 in the morning.
Then straight outside into the chaos. Every city, every town, every tiny village has its own parade. Not military. Never military. This is Norway, so the main stars of the day are children. Schools marching through the streets with Norwegian flags everywhere, brass bands trying their best, kids screaming, parents crying from pride, and everyone somehow surviving on 3 hours of sleep.
In Oslo the royal family stands on the balcony at Royal Palace greeting thousands of children walking past in the huge national parade. Entire streets become red, white, and blue. Bunads everywhere. Some people wear family bunads worth more than a car. Tourists stare in confusion. Norwegians pretend this level of patriotism is completely normal once a year.
The unofficial national sport of the day is eating as much ice cream and as many hot dogs as physically possible. Kids are allowed unlimited sugar. Adults too, honestly. Ice cream before lunch? Absolutely. Three hot dogs in one hand and champagne in the other? Traditional.
