One of the most unexpected squares in the Bellingham Historical Society’s Bicentennial Quilt doesn’t depict a colonial landmark or Revolutionary War figure—it celebrates space exploration. Created by Janice McCarthy, the “Apollo 14 Flight” square honors a little-known connection between Bellingham and NASA’s 1971 moon mission. During Apollo 14, several hundred commemorative coins secretly carried aboard the command module while it orbited the moon 34 times had been struck in a room at a factory on Pearl Street in Caryville. In recognition of the flight, the Bellingham Historical Society offered honorary memberships to astronauts Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa. Roosa was the only astronaut to accept, making Bellingham the only place in the world to receive that distinction. The quilt square itself includes a creatively modified G.I. Joe astronaut suit and even contains a hidden message from the quilting group intended to be opened on July 4, 2076, along with a 1971 quarter, a Bicentennial 50¢ piece, and a “silver” dollar tucked into the pocket. Today, the quilt is proudly on display at the Bellingham Historical Commission Museum during regular hours and by appointment, offering visitors a unique window into the people, places, and pride that define Bellingham’s history. Barton, geologist, professor, explorer, and founder of the @bostonchildrensmuseum . Trails are flat and accessible, with the walk lasting approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Experience the music that helped inspire a revolution at What a Glorious Crash They Made: Music of the Revolution on Sunday, May 17 from 3:00–4:00 PM at the Round Room of the @wayland_library . Tenor and harpsichordist Richard Franklin Donohue, performing in 18th century dress, will bring Revolutionary-era music to life through a stirring collection of hymns and “New Songs” published between the Stamp Act and the British surrender at Yorktown. These songs inspired rebellion, celebrated victory, and gave voice to the growing spirit of independence that helped shape a nation. In the words of John Adams, this music “cultivated the sensations of Freedom.” A singer, historian, and longtime historical society leader, Donohue specializes in historic music and storytelling that connects audiences to the people and emotions behind the Revolution. 📍 Wayland Free Public Library 📅 Sunday, May 17 🕒 3:00–4:00 PM Sponsored by @Wayland Rev250
