Welcome back to our series where author @eskilfagerstrom brings Lund’s history to life – one story at a time, from his book The History of Lund. This time 👉 30 November in Lund – a date that, during the 1980s and 90s, turned the city into something resembling a besieged zone. Far-right groups gathered to honour King Charles XII with marches through the city, while mobilised counter-protesters met them in the streets. What followed was a tense and surreal period in Lund’s history – one that can feel almost hard to believe today. In 1991, a barricade was built by counter-protesters on Stora Södergatan, right outside where the Arken bookshop stands today. In the years that followed, tensions escalated further, with up to 1,500 police officers deployed to maintain order. Eventually, the situation was defused by separating demonstrators and counter-demonstrators into different parts of the city. Today, the 30 November demonstrations have been replaced by solidarity torchlight processions against racism. 🎥 Watch, listen (in Swedish), and discover a dramatic chapter of Lund’s past. 📚 Want to dive deeper into Lund’s history? Welcome to our new series, where author @eskilfagerstrom brings Lund’s history to life – one story at a time, from his new book The History of Lund🙌 First out: Esaias Tegnér – one of Sweden’s most influential poets, and a true superstar of his time, both nationally and right here in Lund. In the early 19th century, Tegnér wasn’t just shaping literature as a pastor and professor at Lund University – he was also shaping what many describe as the “Lund spirit”: full of irony, humour, and a tendency to poke fun at authority. Tegnér would stroll through Lund with his pug, and spend time at a house known as Härberget. There, he met with academic friends to smoke pipes, write sharp (and sometimes rather mean) poems, and gossip about colleagues. 🎥 Watch, listen (in Swedish), and discover a piece of Lund’s past. ✨ Competition time! Do you know where the stone used to build Lund Cathedral was quarried? Answer in the comments for a chance to win a copy of Eskil’s book.👇 First come, first served – we have three books to give away! #Lund #lundshistoria #historienomlund #visitlund
