Will you be having an Irn Bru with your dinner tomorrow night? 🏴 Here's a couple of interesting facts about the soft drink's connection to Falkirk!
Pictured is Robert Barr’s Falkirk factory at the bottom of Cockburn Street, where he first started the soft drinks business in 1875. Back then, deliveries from the factory to shops were restricted to 10 miles out and back each day – the distance a horse could travel 🐴 The firm’s horse drawn delivery ‘lorries’ were a familiar sight throughout the area.
The original 'Iron Brew' recipe (renamed Irn Bru in 1946) was jointly launched by Robert Barr, Falkirk and AG Barr & Co. Glasgow on Monday 15th April 1901.
You might assume this was the first time it was advertised or sold. However, an advert in the Falkirk Cookery Book, from October 1900, suggests otherwise. The advert states that Irn Bru was “only to be had in Scotland from R. Barr, Falkirk” 👀🤔
