Final days to see VIOLA BITTL sieben jahre on view until this Saturday, April 18 @walterstormsgalerie Berlin With the solo exhibition sieben jahre (seven years), the Walter Storms Gallery presents an overview of the works created by Viola Bittl (born 1980) over the past seven years. The exhibition marks a moment of retrospection that can be interpreted both as an end point and a new beginning. The title initially functions as a temporal bracket. sieben jahre understands time not as a linear narrative, but as a condensation. As a period in which processes, ideas, and formal decisions are bundled and brought together in the exhibition. In Bittl’s painting, time is not depicted, but inscribes itself as a trace in the layering of color. In her paintings, Bittl takes up the intellectual clarity and reduced formal language of modernism. VIOLA BITTL Ohne Titel IV, 2024 oil on canvas 190 x 160 cm Viola Bittl, born in 1980, studied from 2004 to 2008 with Sean Scully in Munich and completed her studies as a master student of Christa Näher at the Städelschule Frankfurt. After an artist residency grant from the Hessian Cultural Foundation in New York (2017/2018), she was a fellow at the International Artists’ House Villa Concordia in Bamberg in 2024/2025. Bittl participated in the important survey exhibition Jetzt! Junge Malerei in Deutschland (2019/2020) held at the Kunstmuseen Bonn, Wiesbaden, Chemnitz, as well as the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. In 2024, the Städtisches Museum Emden presented an extensive solo exhibition of Viola Bittl’s work, accompanied by a catalogue. Since her first exhibition on Schellingstraße in 2024, Viola Bittl has been a regular artist in our gallery’s roster. The current exhibition presents the results of her stay in Bamberg: six large-format paintings, two medium-sized paintings, as well as a few works on paper. - VIOLA BITTL. Bittl is among the most notable representatives of abstract painting in Germany. In the solo exhibition Suite B., we present eight paintings and several works on paper – created during Viola Bittl’s one-year scholarship at Villa Concordia in Bamberg (2024/25).
