Incredible soul record out of Norfolk, Virginia that is shockingly still under the radar. Produced by Lenis Guess and recorded at his studio in Norfalk who was also behind some other coveted under the radar records by “Peace, Justice and Equality” and “Shake”. A really unique sound and mix that takes this would be typical soul record up a notch.

Bim Sherman is easily one of my favorite voices in reggae music. I first became aware of his music through his collaborations and solo release on Adrian Sherman’s label, On-U Sound. Since then, I’ve gone back through his extensive catalog of 7inch releases during the 70s when he was still in Jamaica before moving to the UK in 1979. Lovers Leap Showcase is probably the number one reggae record on my want list currently and his last release in Jamaica in 1978.
This record and especially the dub versions are incredible. Prince Jammy on the controls so you know you are getting top tier mixes layered with Bim’s vocals. “Make It (dub)” is easily in the conversation for one of my top dub tracks to date.

This one has been on repeat in my apartment over the last month. The title of this record says it all…it is a true soul album with a few reggae tracks sprinkled in. The soul tracks on this record can really go toe to toe with any soul coming out of the United States in my opinion.
Beres Hammond’s vocals are incredible and he is backed by some huge names. Produced and arranged by Willie Lindo and of course on guitar. Was shocked to see Cedric Brooks on the tenor and alto sax on this record (one of my favorite musicians from Jamaica). I’m sure they had so much fun making this record and you can feel it.

Over the last year or two I’ve mostly focused on digging for 80s-90s Brasilian records. However, this record has been near the top of my want list for Brasilian records for quite sometime. Not an easy one to track down but thanks to @rehneh I have finally secured a copy. Might not be the cleanest copy, but it’ll do!
This record captures a lot of the classic Brasilian sounds from the early 70s with a blend of psych, prog, funk, and MPB but it goes even further. Not sure why this one isn’t on everyone’s radar. Great one to blast on this beautiful 45 degree weather day in Brooklyn.
