Very nice omakase last night at @juni_sf . My first time for dinner after trying a chirashi lunch box once during the pandemic. Japanese Whiting was the single best bite. Kind of surprised that the restaurant’s wine list is so brief. Only three sakes to choose from, and a handful of wines. Not what I would expect from a top-drawer place like this.

This is the best singe-variety Alicante Bouschet I’ve ever tasted. On its own, and perhaps made with less skill, the grape can have harsh tannins and angular qualities to its flavors, not to mention easily getting overripe. This one, foot-trodden in concrete lagars “only by the ladies” is supple, bright, smooth, and utterly delicious. Ages in used oak for a year and then in bottle for a couple of years before release.
