I’m pleased to present a series - and indeed a form of series - I’ve long wanted to create.
“Sukkwan Island" a photo essay by
@vladimirdefontenay and myself (just a 1st preview here)
“Tom (Swann Arlaud) takes his thirteen-year-old son (Woody Norman) to spend a year on a remote island in the Far North. This return to a wild way of life, set within a vast and unforgiving landscape, offers a chance to reconnect. But isolation and extreme conditions put their relationship to the test.”
The above synopsis applies both to the feature film « Sukkwan Island », in theaters April 29, and to this essay.
The project was shot on and around the set of the feature film of the same name.
Yet it is not a making-of. It is a free visual narrative - shaped by the film, yet independent from it.
Fragments of the shoot, stolen moments, and constructed images all merge into a single, indistinct space - a work of fiction rooted in reality.
Filmed and shot over two periods, winter and spring 2024, above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway.
I co-authored this series with Vlad, who invited me and welcomed me onto his set, into his film, giving me access to his vision.
My sincere thanks to Vlad, Swann Arlaud, Woody Norman, the entire film crew, and
@hautetcourt for their trust and generosity.
The entire essay is available on my website (link in bio) and will be featured as a portfolio in tomorrow’s edition of
@m_magazine (thanks to Federica Rossi & Laurence Lagrange).
