Posted @withregram@archdigestindia Drawing in Metal is the lyrical title of a 10-minute documentary short film capturing the high art that is Vikram Goyal’s (@vikramgoyalstudio ) mesmerizing metal design practice. The title perfectly captures the brilliance of the celebrated product designer’s oeuvre, one honed over a two-decade journey of innovation in the decorative arts. Goyal’s ability to mine India’s heritage while simultaneously forging a contemporary visual language has won him accolades both at home and overseas. Last year, he was the first Indian designer to show at Nilufar (@nilufargallery ), Nina Yashar’s (@ninayashar ) famous design gallery in Milan; recently, he signed on to be represented by the acclaimed Los Angeles–based gallery Future Perfect. Importantly, in a country obsessed with gold, Goyal has elevated a traditional material like brass to a newfound covetable status through his extraordinary artistic interventions. What drew Goyal to pushing the boundaries with repoussage was actually quite simple: It was the one technique that allowed him to bring his wild imagination to life. That includes everything from the ornate images of Indian mythology to chinoiserie to abstract organic forms—rendered in everything from furniture to vast wall panels. “Repoussé has allowed me to completely bring to life all these different forms of the visual arts, and is very special because the same amount of time is spent ideating as making the art,” he explains. Goyal’s new e-commerce venture, Viya (@viyadesignofficial ) is a 200-person-strong atelier renowned for its quality, creativity and ability to achieve scale. Two decades. One unwavering vision. Vikram Goyal has built a design practice that does what few can — translate the soul of India's ancient craft traditions into works that captivate the world's most prestigious galleries and art fairs. From PAD London to Design Miami, his limited-edition furniture and objects carry centuries of metalwork mastery into strikingly contemporary form. Each piece is a quiet conversation between artisan knowledge and modern design thinking. A two-time Elle Decor Designer of the Year, Goyal doesn't just celebrate India's craft legacy — he pushes it further. Red Earth Side Table VIKRAM GOYAL X NILUFAR Forests hold within them an inimitable strength, they are layered, organic, and ever-evolving. The Red Earth table draws from the rhythm of growth and renewal in this living terrain. Cast entirely in bronze, its textured surface mimics the bark, roots, and rugged formations found deep within the forest floor. Through the studio’s explorations in bronze casting, the material is allowed to flow, twist, and solidify into sculptural forms that appear almost alive.

Harmony Of The Heavens A celestial geometry, Harmony of the Heavens is an abstracted reference to Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar, the astronomical observatory whose precise stone instruments once aligned human observation with planetary movement. Jantar Mantars are monumental stone instruments designed to observe the sky— tracking the sun, planets, and stars to measure time and understand celestial cycles. This particular observatory, unlike the other Jantar Mantars, uniquely combines the realms of astronomy and astrology—science and belief—where zodiac signs enter the narrative as cosmic beliefs. The collection draws from its ordered arcs, shadow-casting planes, and mathematical harmony, translated through the studio’s signature craft techniques of repoussé, and hollowed joinery. Together, these elements reflect humanity’s desire to translate the cosmos into structural form.

Bagh Chandelier Immortalising the ephemeral beauty of nature, the Bagh chandelier, in patinated brass, draws inspiration from India’s historic gardens — where water, flora, and architecture existed to complement the other, and invoke harmony with the self. From the terraced hill gardens of Kashmir to the palace courtyards of Rajasthan, these sanctuaries offered shade and scent, symmetry and stillness. Branching, vine-like bases — shaped through a combination of freeform casting and sheet metal — evoke the organic asymmetry of petals and leaves, its meandering movement held still in time. While abstracted and contemporised, Bagh retains the intricate elegance that defines the Studio’s visual language. Here, brass becomes a medium between the impermanent and the permanent — its solidity preserving the memory of the natural world.

I am thrilled to announce the opening of our lifestyle brand Viya’s flagship store at Trafford House, Mumbai — one of the city’s iconic heritage buildings, situated at Fort, in the heart of the city. We will continue to lead Viya’s online presence and Vikram Goyal Studio from our headquarters in New Delhi. Trafford House, a long-standing and highly regarded address known for its legacy of finely crafted, classically designed furniture, carries forward its dialogue with history—making it the perfect setting for Viya’s flagship. Returning to Mumbai feels deeply meaningful. This city has always been an important part of our journey. With Viya, we wanted to come back with clarity and focus—to create a space that represents who we are today. Trafford House, with its heritage and quiet grandeur, felt like the perfect place for our flagship—a space where history and contemporary design can coexist naturally. The flagship houses Viya’s complete range of lifestyle offerings— from tables, chairs, lighting , vases, and trays to an expanded collection of soft furnishings. The Mumbai store also marks the launch of Viya apparel and carpets and a new, expanded collection of cane objects. A dedicated room for Vikram Goyal Studio consultations is integrated within the space. Come visit !! @viyadesignofficial

Increasingly, some of the most original contemporary work emerges from designing between worlds, rich with craft lineages, material intelligence, and aesthetic philosphies beyond mainstream design narratives.
