It's hard to believe it's been 3 years of S.T.A.T.I.C. already. It's been a real joy to curate this series with David and I've seen so much growth in the Columbus experimental music community.
FATAL GAZE kicked off the trials with an experiment to open our continuing collaborations to the entire audience. Through a series of interfaces that were designed to be easily approachable we invited any and all to join us. It was a joy to watch people interact with these in ways I couldn't have imagined. It was great to sit back and watch the audience take the lead in this.
Up next was a trial curated by Gerard Cox. Gerard had an incredible network of collaborators and it's always a treat to see what heaven hitters he brings with him. This group, jamming together for the first time, absolutely locked in. Comprised of blaring horns, a bowed gong, bass and a trio of keys this ensomble really showed what each of them could do.
When anyone gives their time to our series it's appreciated. It's especially appreciated when people travel to perform. Magic Smoke, Luke and Russ, have traveled from Dayton multiple times to participate. They were a physical embodiment of the name, their pulsing synths and drones absolutely haunting in the haze.
Ive known Bobb Hatt for about 20 years at this point and in this time I've not known anyone more dedicated to sharpening their unique performance vision. This production found Bobb surrounded by 4 amplifiers with radios controled by the audience as well as a literal steel drum. Summoning feedback with a guitar bob conducted and controlled the chaos as only he can.
Closing out the night was another S.T.A.T.I.C. Supergroup performing together for the first time. Aphasic Dust Transmissions, led by Aimee Lee who produces all the amazing visuals you see at the events. I've had the pleasure of collaborating with almost all of these folks and I can tell you that they all can JAM. This night found them in an incredible conversation weaving together swelling walls of strings, electronics, and percussion.
