The following statement of support for the Voice to Parliament has been endorsed by the Vic Park Pride committee:
Vic Park Pride was created in response to the same-sex marriage plebiscite in 2017, during which our community felt targeted, where our worth and equality were debated in a public arena.
2017 was a difficult time for our community and we felt the most vulnerable in the final weeks leading up to the vote. The No campaigns for same sex marriage become louder and filled with more vitriol. Those campaigns alluded to the alleged consequences of changing laws and fear mongering about our community. They failed to focus on the question being asked about the union of two people of the same sex in marriage.
As we near the referendum for the Voice to Parliament, we see the same arguments from the No campaign. Once again, the question that is being asked is lost in the noise.
The question is simply:
Do we approve an alteration in the constitution to recognise the First Nations People of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?
For us, the answer is Yes.
We know that voting Yes for same-sex marriage created harmony in our community. It allowed acknowledgement of our relationships and recognition of our life partners. It created a fairer and more equal place in Australia. This simple act of recognition and acknowledgement is what we need to do again. The resounding Yes vote was just the beginning for our community. Just like a resounding Yes vote for the Voice to Parliament will be the beginning for the First Nations people.
