Here's some good news for all those who can't live without their furry friends. According to a study, your pet might just be the perfect remedy if you're in pain. Researchers theorise that dogs not only relieve anxiety and depression by offering emotional support, but may also change how some patients experience pain.⁠ ⁠ "There is research showing that pets are an important part of our health in different ways. They motivate us, they get us up, (give us) routines, the human-animal bond," said lead study author Colleen Dell. Say hello to your new friend: a plastic-eating mold that could avert the global recycling crisis within five years. Because it loves eating plastic. ⁠ ⁠ Scientists at the University of Sydney discovered two types of fungi—usually found in plants and soil—are able to break down plastic at the “highest degradation rate reported in the literature that we know in the world." Meaning they can munch through stubborn plastics, like cling wrap and ice cream tubs, with relative ease.⁠ ⁠ In their research, the fungi was able to break down plastic in 140 days. Which the scientists involved say could be scaled up to process thousands of tonnes of plastic a year, with the mold becoming available as a waste management solution within the next five years. Please, mold, come and eat up all of our chucked away trash.⁠ ⁠ Needless to say, no, this does not mean we can use as much plastic we want now. "We need the behavioral issues, we need the social issues, we need the business issues, all of these need to be resolved around the plastics problem. The technology is only half the solution,” said Professor Abbas, a chemical engineer on the team. That said, along with our continued efforts to use paper straws, recycle properly and massively reduce our waste, we welcome this plastic-eating fungi to the fold.

New research investigating the link between psychedelics and mental health confirms what psychonauts have long said to be true – that psychedelics have mind-expanding properties.⁠ ⁠ Research published in the ‘Science’ journal found that psychedelics can get inside the nerve cells in the cortex–the brain region responsible for consciousness–and signal neurons to grow. Which is important, because scientists believe growing those neurons can result in lower anxiety, and improved mood.⁠ ⁠ It was previously thought that serotonin made these neurons grow—until it was recently discovered that this isn’t true. Most of the receptors responsible for neuron growth are located deeper in the cell – a place too deep for serotonin to reach. This new study says “greasy” substances like LSD can easily reach those receptors, prompting them to grow new neurons.⁠ ⁠ “It seems to overturn a lot about what we think should be true about how these drugs work,” says neuroscientist Alex Kwan of Cornell University, who was not involved in the study. “Everybody, including myself, thought that [psychedelics] act on receptors that are on the cell surface.”
