Hi my name is Martell & I like to make things.
But across all the things I’ve made, music, events, initiatives etc I always dreamed of making movies and tv shows. I didn’t think someone like me from the ends and no leg up in life would have any chance of doing this but forget that

EARLY BLACK BRITISH ACTS YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO: PART 3
Over the course of looking into and sharing early Black British musicians as I research for the TV show that I’m writing ‘Black Desire vs Babylon’, I’ve really been taken aback by how many people have thanked me or shared songs with me. So I decided I’d do one more post
IMAGINATION - JUST AN ILLUSION [1982]
East London. Amazing video.
THE REAL THING - CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE [1978]
Liverpool. Amazing Britfunk pioneers.
JEAN ADEBAMBO - PARADISE [1981]
North London. An amazing vocalist who never got the recognition she deserved. RIP
LENNIE DE ICE - U ASK FOR IT [1994]
East London. This is the creator of Jungle btw.
PHIL FEARON & GALAXY - DANCING TIGHT [1984]
North West London. Very underrated, this one was sent to me. I love his stuff.
SMILEY CULTURE - WESTLAND HELICOPTER [1986]
South London. Pioneer of British Dancehall & Hip Hop who was murdered by Surrey Police who then lied about it. RIP and bun Babylon
EPHRAIM LEWIS - DROWNING IN YOUR EYES [1992}
Wolverhampton. Talented vocalist who was murdered by LAPD. Almost a theme here.
JILL FRANCIS - MAKE LOVE TO ME [1993]
London. Minor hit that’s been stuck in my head forever.
GEOFFREY WILLIAMS - DRIVE [1996]
West London. I can’t believe he’s not more well remembered. He was active for so long.
EDDY GRANT - ELECTRIC AVENUE [1982]
North West London. The king of socially conscious hits.
THE PRODIGY - BREATHE [1997]
Essex. Literally changed the world with their sound.
NIGHTMARES ON WAX - NIGHTS [1991]
Leeds. Has some of the best DJ sets out but incredible producer
hi 🙋🏽♂️it’s my birthday today 🫂
a 2021 song, i stated:
‘I have a few years until I hit the 27 club. It’s where I’m headed real quick if I keep messing up’.
Now today, the day of my 28th birthday, I ask: what would life have been like if I hadn’t made it through the year?
I guess we’ll never know 😛
My favourite films with random dance scenes (& the songs!)
I used to hate dancing.
Dance can reveal cultural truths, your self image & the social dynamic you grew up in solely through movement alone. As I’ve learnt to accept who I am as opposed to what society wants me to be, I’ve become proud of these signifiers of my inner world expressed through the medium - I like to dance now!
I think it’s for this reason I find it so cool when you see dancing somewhere it shouldn’t be - it can be funny, heartwarming or disturbing or all of these things at one. I dance whenever I feel like it now hahaha
Film does this so well - many of the scripts I’ve written have moments of dance for the effect of representing the inner mind of my characters or just because I think it’s really funny
So I wanted to spotlight some of my favourite films that are not about dancing that use dance really well to represent a moment, a character or a story.
BELLY (1998): MR VEGAS & SEAN PAUL - TOP SHOTTA 🇯🇲
My favourite looking film ever. Plot is questionable.
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (2004): JAMIROQUAI - CANNED HEAT 🥫
May have made this song a classic
GOOD BURGER (1997): FUNKADELIC - NOT JUST KNEE DEEP 🍔
George Clinton’s cameo in this is incredible. Craziest man in an asylum 😭
THE BEST MAN (1999): CAMEO - CANDY 🍬
‘If this don’t play at your wedding you ain’t black’ - Joe Biden
BIG FAT LIAR (2002): DURAN DURAN - HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF 👥
Childhood favourite of mine, the OST and humour generally is incredible.
CITY OF GOD (2002): CARL DOUGLAS - KUNG FU FIGHTING 🥋
Generally best use of music in any scene imo
EX-MACHINA (2014): OLIVER CHEETHAM - GET DOWN SATURDAY NIGHT 🕺🏽
it makes so much sense for the character but lmao😭
DO THE RIGHT THING (1989): PUBLIC ENEMY - FIGHT THE POWER ✊🏾
Iconic opening. Iconic song. Relevant to the movie’s themes.
ONCE A THIEF (1991): VIOLET LAM - UNTITLED 🦹🏽♂️
This scene kills me LOOOOL. He pimped his ride.
FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS (2003): BEYONCÉ, ANGIE STONE & MELBA MOOR - TIME TO COME HOME ⛪️
Cuba Gooding Jr’s dancing getting more animated as the movie goes is a nice (probably unintentional) motif.
ANTI.NET FOR CYBERDANCE AT THE HORNIMAN

EVERYONE WHO WAS INVOLVED I LOVE YOU
IDREES ON THE PICS @idrees.lakee
life in london, 90s-00s
live from the family photo book
i love that my parents kept these - I forgot about a lot & memory is one of the core things we have. I mourn the community we had - & I want to continue building my own so our kids can have the type of childhood I had
I decided to post some more early Black British music, which in my head would soundtrack the show I’m writing ‘Black Desire vs Babylon’.
I’ve been dealing with some big time microaggressions at uni recently I’ll be real. But why would I let those who wanna bring me down prosper, I could never be a victim. Nobody can ever make me ashamed of being being Afro-Caribbean or Black British, when we’ve added so much to worldwide culture! These people laid the foundation for me to even be studying film & trying to further spread our stories across the galaxy so let’s celebrate them!
Please add these to your playlist, show the original artists love and respect how influential our culture has been.
FREEZ - SOUTHERN FREEZ [1980]
This song reminds me of my dad big time. Hold tight Big Martin Lindsay
LABI SIFFRE - MY SONG [1972]
Most known for being the sample for Kanye - I Wonder, beautiful AF. Probably one of the first queer West Indian men I was aware of.
JUNIOR - MAMA USED TO SAY
didn’t know who he was til my dad mentioned him recently. Then I heard this & realised I’d heard it a million times.
52nd STREET - TELL ME HOW IT FEELS [1985]
Please give Manchester artists music video budget
SANDRA CROSS - YOU’RE LYING [1986]
Certified cleaning Sunday classic
LIGHT OF THE WORLD - NO. 1 GIRL [1982]
A very influential band. Went on to form many big bands between them
CYMANDE - BROTHERS ON THE SLIDE [1974]
In lots of random films like The Worst Person in the World and Horrible Bosses.
LOOSE ENDS - YOU CAN’T STOP THE RAIN [1985]
MVPs of Rare Groove, without question.
JANET KAY - SILLY GAMES [1979]
Afro-Caribbean national anthem without question.
BRAND NEW HEAVIES - SOMETIMES (UMMAH REMIX) [1997]
A really early J Dilla remix of a BNH classic!
Thanks!!
