Why So Noir?
I remember looking at these photos for the first time and thinking they were not good enough. That I was not good enough. That I failed to capture something essential. Looking back now, that judgment feels almost absurd. The image did not change. Only the way I looked at it did.
Psychology has a word for this erosion. Hedonic adaptation. The nervous system recalibrates to abundance until what once felt miraculous becomes invisible. When survival is no longer the primary concern, the mind invents new threats. Comparison replaces hunger. Self evaluation replaces wonder. We stop asking whether something is meaningful and start asking whether it competes.
History shows this pattern repeating. In periods of sudden prosperity, cultures often become obsessed with refinement and status rather than substance. Late Roman society prized spectacle over virtue. The Belle Époque celebrated excess while standing on the edge of collapse. When effort disappears, so does reverence. What costs nothing feels like nothing.
The philosopher William James warned that attention is the substance of life. What we attend to becomes our reality. When everything is available at all times, attention fractures. The self follows. You are everywhere and nowhere simultaneously, consuming moments instead of inhabiting them.
