Where to begin. The women in my life who have raised me and shown me how to navigate this world were the reason to tell the story of Tropicalía and the feature film from which it stems from. My Thelmita, who we recently lost, was a core character not only in my life but in the pages of the screenplays which tell her story and those of her sisters and their mother. It’s a story about Marisela, who’s worked for my family for over 4 decades and in many ways raised the family’s children. It’s about my sisters. When I began to write Tropicalía I could not imagine the wonderful corners of the world where this film has found a space, I could not have imagined that it will now have it’s official online premiere on the
@criterioncollection channel. What a ride. Things like this don’t happen to people like me, to people who hail from the island from which I come from. I can’t believe that on August 1st We’ll all be able to see the Dominican Republic represented on this incredible platform.
