Yesterday I announced my next studio record, HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT TIME. Out May 1st. And indeed released the first track from it GAYFEVER. This record was an exercise in trust and patience and self belief. I had the songs, but nothing else came easy. It took a long time for the pieces to come together and no matter how I much I pushed, nothing was feeling right. Then when it did, outside influence and rejection had me questioning everything. Trust your intuition. And create with people you love. For now I would like to thank my band and everyone that featured on the record and have played some of these songs with me round the world. Audrey May, @albertriver_ , @ben_lemi , @samuelaustin.png , @bella.guarrera . Ben Lemi for producing it, the endless hours in the studio we spent ironing every detail. @mixedbysouschef for mastering. I would also like to thank @nic_sandflower for all the beautiful photos and waking up early with me to take them. And @crossingwater for the record design and the hours spent talking about the album and vision and always believing in me. You cannot demand creativity. You can work for it. Set up the right conditions. But ultimately it does not adhere to industry timelines. Like a baby, it will come when it’s good and ready. Much more to say. Many more to thank. It is with a mighty grin I present to you: Heaven Knows What Time. My new record. My beating troubled boyish defected heart flouting about for the world to hear. There is also a very special video for Walking In Vegas out-- directed by the brother @albertriver_ and edited together through pure inspiration and adventure. And finally, indeed we are going on tour New Zealand. Get your tickets and may we sing in unison like your grandmothers church choir. This record didn't come easy. We worked hard for it. And often I wanted to give it up entirely, and I would have. Had it not been for the encouragement of my friends. I received what felt like a lot of rejection for this record. It was a test in blindly believing in myself, these songs and a vision i could feel but couldn't quite articulate. Thank you to @nzpacificstudio for giving me the space to write it. I was drawn to deep introspection, criticism, moodiness, heartbreak. Though maybe with stronger footing, humor, contradiction, more of an observer than a participant. Grounded in my body, but atop my head, wigs of many colours. Thank you @ben_lemi - whom put his blood sweat and tears into this album. All the while I was whispering in his ear, mostly nonsense and the word 'poo' which I still find funny (at this big age). Thank you to my band for their musical and vocal contributions. in light of my album coming out tomorrow, I found this video documenting the first day of my writing residency. Before the songs had come, when Heaven Knows What Time was nothing but half baked ideas, nonsense ramblings, a list of rules and an irrationally mountainous fear I would not demo a record but in fact curl into a ball and disappoint everyone. It's easy to think these creations come easy. But everything has a first day. I remember sensing how big the mountain was in front of me and I was already exhausted and terrified. But here I am, planting my flag at the top and taking a breath. Until, the next one. 🫡 #nzmusicmonth #newmusic #creativeprocess
