Gizmodo recently did an exciting article on the Contact lenses that were made for Ahsoka and why some lenses are more successful at pulling of the desired effect than others.
The lenses pictured above are Ezra, and The Grand Admiral.A fun note about the Grand Admiral is that production always knew that these specific eyes would utilize the assistance of visual effects along with hand painted lenses.
When this is the case, VFX will scan the painted lens while it’s placed on a glass eye that has a similar eye color to the actor that will be wearing the lenses. This makes the tracking of the soon to be VFX’d eye much easier and gives the opportunity to blend techniques of practical and post production:)
The main hurtle with paining lenses is that the lens only accepts a tiny bit of color at a time, so the paintworks have to be repeated multiple times.
Sometimes repeated as many as 20 times! This makes fine detail near impossible.
Though this contact lens may not look like much, it’s a giant leap for lens-kind
