So pleased to attend artist: Jose Galvan Martinez’s MFA Thesis show at CSUN yesterday. It certainly was a pleasure to congratulate him on his success as he moves forward with his career. He’s off soon to a year long residency in Lincoln, Nebraska. He’s also being curated into an upcoming exhibition in late July at: Charlie James Gallery in Chinatown. We also visited his on campus MFA Studio and the campus Kiln area to preview two works in progress for the upcoming exhibition! Congratulations to Jose!!

Meet José Galván Martínez, a Chilango visual artist now based in Oxnard, CA, and MFA Candidate at California State University, Northridge. His work moves through the memory of his Mexican roots and the assimilation into American culture. Layered with influences from graffiti, street art, urban aesthetics, and punk, his practice feels like a lived archive, raw, restless, and deeply personal. It speaks to constant movement, to commutes, to the quiet and loud ways identity reshapes itself over time.

And with this, my 6th and final review in the program comes to a close. What a fucking wild ride, 3 years flew right by and consequently dragged on. To think 10 years ago I was barely picking up some colored pencils and a sketch pad to draw as a hobby and now I’m one step closer to receiving my MFA.
As this chapter comes to a close, a new one will start and I can’t wait for whats ahead, this was a great experience, but it’s now time to move forward, proud of what I’ve achieved and thankful for all the help that’s gotten me this far 🙂↔️

Language in Mexico is as rich and culturally relevant as its cuisine, and this ongoing video series explores the colorful folklore of my culture.
Rice is a food that each culture cooks and eats differently, at different times a day and accompanied by a variety of foods. This is a depiction of rice as I grew up cooking and eating.

The reality of living as a migrant in the United States at this time is far deeper and nuanced than any slogan could capture.
While the fear of stepping outside our homes early into uncertainty is present, but we refuse to cower in fear because we have a life to live, families to support and things to achieve. Sometimes resistance and defiance lives in the simple act of continuing on despite the risk and adversity and not letting those who oppress belittle us or our existence.
No matter how assimilated you can be as a migrant, the thought of being detained and removed never quite leaves.

(b. 1988, Mexico City, MX)
Galván Martínez is a Chilango visual artist based in Oxnard, CA.
Galván Martínez received a BA in Studio Art from California State University, Channel Islands and is currently working on his MFA at California State University, Northridge.
His work is an amalgamation of decades of assimilation to American culture, memories of his native Mexico, constant relocations and commutes.
His practice is further informed by the subversive nature and aesthetics of urbanism, graffiti, street art, and punk rock.

Time, ideas, landmarks, graffiti, news cycles, structures and daily commutes amalgamate into the visuals I utilize. Drawing from anything and anytime of day as I get lost in the landscape outside the moving windows. Sometimes its the rusty red oil drum outside of ceramics I’ve utilized as plinth far too many times, other times its the former ashtrays turned planters around the art complex, the eye wash station by the crucible, others are the graffiti plastered walls between Chatsworth and Northridge and sometimes its the random crap I’ve pocketed while at SLC that reminds me of both traveling and the friends I’ve made these past few years.
I may be among few to analyze and appreciate whats often overlooked, but without them all, things like these would have never been made.

Past the rusty old chain link fences and the no trespassing signs lies the canvas of the writers that inspire and influence me. The ones that fill the otherwise boring gray slabs with colors, textures and imagery.
I respect the risk and commitment to what others see as vandalism and abandonment.
As the train speeds by The Valley and into LA, I feel fortunate to have a mobile gallery of constantly changing art at my window. An experience and visuals that will likely continue to influence and inspire my work long after I no longer see them.
Accompanying the visuals, music plays a big role in the experience, with my usual rotation as eclectic as the landscape, I often drift between imagination and reality, making associations between names in walls and band names. Leading to the conception of this vessel, capturing that experience. For those in the know, they’ll pick up on a few bands and artists for sure.
