We are pleased to welcome Fabrizio Nevola as Visiting Scholar at the VeDPH during the Spring semester 2026.
Nevola is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture and Co-Director of Digital Humanities at the University of #Exeter. His research explores urban history, visual culture, and digital approaches to public history.
During his stay in Venice, he is developing the project Hidden Venice: microhistories of architecture around San Francesco della Vigna, expanding the HistoryCity app with a new walking trail dedicated to the architectural and social history of the area. Through geolocated storytelling and digital tools, the project reveals the microhistories of urban spaces and the networks of people involved in their construction.
The research is supported by a Giles Constable Award from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, supporting projects on the culture and history of the Italian Renaissance.

🌍📚 New Visiting Scholar at VEPDH
We are delighted to welcome James Coleman, Associate Professor of Italian at the University of #Pittsburgh, who will spend the Spring semester 2026 in Venice as Visiting Scholar at the Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities of Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia.
A specialist in Italian literature from the 14th to the 18th centuries, Coleman is currently working on his project Reading Archipelagos: Italian Humanism and Early Modern Books of Islands, supported by the Giles Constable Award from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
His research bridges Italian humanism and early modern island books with innovative digital approaches, including network analysis and mapping tools — methodologies that reveal hidden connections between texts, places, and intellectual communities.
A project that resonates strongly with our Centre’s mission: reading the past as an archipelago of relationships, where each island becomes a node in a wider network of meaning.
Welcome to Venice, James! 🌊✨

A meeting of minds between Venice and Dublin. 🏛️🇮🇪🇮🇹
It was an honor to host Fiona Tyrell from @trinitycollegedublin today at the @vedph , thanks to @cafoscari . As an expert in communicating the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Fiona understands that research only truly “lives” when it is shared.
Our conversation delved into the delicate art of “translation”—how we take the complex, often silent data of our past and turn it into a narrative that resonates today. We tackled a vital ethical challenge: How do we communicate research that is intentionally complex, messy, or “unresolved” without it getting lost in a media landscape that demands easy answers?
From our VeDPH projects and experiments to the ethics of digital storytelling, we kept returning to one core truth: The Humanities are not just about studying life; they are about communicating what it means to be human—in all its beautiful complexity.
Thank you, Fiona, for the inspiring exchange and for reminding us that the power of a well-told (and honest) story is timeless.
