On August 30, 1993, partial human remains were discovered during the clean-up of a dump site off Beardsley Road, just north of Wright Road, in an unincorporated area near Camarillo. The Ventura County Medical Examiner responded and determined the remains belonged to a male between the ages of 13 and 18. For more than 30 years, his identity remained unknown.
That has now changed.
In March 2025, forensic evidence was submitted for advanced DNA testing. Through the use of Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® and investigative genetic genealogy, our Cold Case Unit followed new leads, conducted extensive interviews, and worked closely with forensic experts to identify potential relatives.
After months of dedicated investigative work, the individual once known as “Camarillo Teen 1993” has been positively identified as Joseph Patrick Reardon (DOB: June 17, 1970).
While this marks a significant breakthrough, many questions remain about Joseph’s life and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. If you knew Joseph, also known as Joe Gilbreth — even briefly — we urge you to come forward.
Any piece of information, no matter how small, could help bring answers and closure. Please contact the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit.
