Six films. One video game. Entirely his own universe.
Albert Birney makes films that shouldn't exist — and they're better for it.
Albert will be screening his latest feature, OBEX, for VCFA's summer residency on June 25, followed by a Q&A. He will also be giving a presentation the morning of June 26. /OBEX
The Baltimore-based filmmaker has directed six features, with premieres at Sundance, SXSW, Slamdance, and the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Sylvio was named one of the ten best films of 2017 by The New Yorker. His most recent feature, Tux and Fanny, spawned a video game collaboration with Gabriel Koenig — because of course it did. He's currently animating two new projects: When We Become Wind (the third Tux and Fanny film) and The Stone Balloon.
A singular filmmaker. We are very excited to welcome him to VCFA this summer.

A surface that breathes and remembers.
"I create a surface that breathes and remembers." — Rema Ghuloum
Rema Ghuloum builds her large-scale abstract paintings slowly, in layers — staining, sanding, abrading — until the canvas holds time itself. Represented by Philip Martin Gallery (Los Angeles) and Tabari Artspace (Dubai), her work has been reviewed in Artforum, Hyperallergic, the LA Times, and the Financial Times, and recognized by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, and Davyd Whaley Foundation.
She joins VCFA as a Visiting Artist this summer, sharing her work and participating in crits. Your studio practice won't be the same.

"I think that's something unique about VCFA is you have a variety of aged people, because a lot of times when you go into undergrad or a junior college or something like that, they're all people right out of high school; you don't get the diversity or the experience that people have." -Austin Smith, Film
Design history is everyone's to write.
Brockett Horne believes graphic design history belongs to all of us — not just those with institutional access.
A designer, educator, and writer, Horne chaired the Graphic Design department at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) for over a decade and now teaches in Boston and all along the East Coast. Her clients include the Baltimore Museum of Art, Johns Hopkins University, and Harvard University. One of her most radical projects is The People's Graphic Design Archive — a crowd-sourced platform she co-directs with Louise Sandhaus, Briar Levit, and Morgan Searcy that asks all of us to write design history, not just those with special training or exclusive access.
We're thrilled to welcome her to VCFA this summer. #VCFA #VCFAGraphicDesign #GraphicDesign #DesignHistory #PeoplesGraphicDesignArchive #MFAprogram #Typography
An Oscar-nominated film. The filmmakers who made it. One summer at VCFA.
This June, VCFA welcomes Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni — the directors and cinematographer behind the Oscar-nominated, Sundance Grand Jury Award-winning documentary "Cutting Through Rocks."
Film Screening | Monday, June 29 | 7PM
Talk & Presentation | Tuesday, June 30 | 10AM–12PM
Sara Khaki is an Oscar-nominated documentary director, producer, and editor whose debut feature has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide, earning audience awards at IDFA, Dok Leipzig, and Visions du Réel, a DGA nomination, and praise from IndieWire as "a deftly shaped work of cinematic nonfiction."
Mohammadreza Eyni is an Oscar-nominated director, producer, and cinematographer, named one of the top five cinematographers at Sundance 2025. Variety called his approach "practically magical" — Hammer to Nail said he delivers "simple moments into cinematic poetry."
Together, they built a film that changed how the world sees women's stories. This summer, they bring that practice to VCFA. #VCFA #VCFAFilm #Documentary #Sundance #OscarNominated #CuttingThroughRocks
