According to my invoices and payslips I’ve done roughly 100 shows, which is wild, I have many thoughts and opinions about sound but also who doesn’t?
Musicians are cool, other audio engineers are cool, I would still be working my day job at the liquor store if people weren’t making music and other engineers weren’t looking out for one another.
So yeah, that’s that, thanks guys, here’s a dotpoint list of shit I’ve learnt that maybe someone will find interesting, and then some neat cabling I try to do every show.
- there are little to no dogmas with sound, bold is good but so is subtlety.
- i don’t always know what’s best, but also bands don’t always know what’s best.
- experiment with everything, if i ever use a preset I should look at why that preset is doing what it’s doing.
- if the band isn’t comfortable on stage then the mix will suffer
- ‘the mix’ is the mythical beast that will haunt you forever

Bad audio, mediocre piano skills, this months music nerding venture
Little snippet of where learning this zesty pop classic ended up. Tried to learn it from memory so ended up missing whole sections of the chord progression, but pretty keen to nail it down and record a full version while I have access to a big ol piano

Also first time sticking a lapel condenser on a kick pedal, ended up sounding 👌
I also placed some baffles around the room mics so they’d only get reflections, and again pretty chuffed with the sound!

We got jazz lords Two Bean Soup and a HRTBRKRs Nirvana-inspired variant, Fart Shaped Box coming along for the ride and throwing down their own aesthetically aligned covers too.

Thinking about what that time has looked like, from head offices downplaying of safety concerns, pressuring staff to reduce thefts while acknowledging that it’s dangerous and generally shit, increasing workloads exponentially while keeping a relatively stagnant pay that doesn’t match…
… to the never ending barrage of customer abuse that stems from being the faces of a company that keeps jacking up its prices almost fortnightly.
Every year I got to witness people from every background, at different points in their lives, from the poorest to the upper middle class, having one bad incident occur in their lives that compromised their “value” in the eyes of capitalism, and watched as their safety nets fell apart and they died, sometimes slowly over a couple years, sometimes within months, and on a handful of occasions right there and then near the shop.
Ive been stalked, punched at work, and have had numerous moments in my life outside of work compromised by the psychological fuckery of being jammed between my need for financial security and being apart of a machine that’s driven by this companies desire for profit at the cost of anyone and everyone within arms reach.
The liquor retail industry exists in this neo-liberal fantasy world where alcohol dependency, and socio-economic factors that contribute to alcoholism don’t exist, least of all its role in facilitating or enabling it.
You don’t get support resources from a liquor store.
