Emmy-winning Sundance documentary Quiet Heroes chronicles the work of Dr. Kristen Ries and Physician Assistant Maggie Snyder in their critical fight against HIV/AIDS at the height of the epidemic. Ries & Snyder were the first--and for a while, the only--medical team treating patients in the hostile, close-minded climate of Utah in the ‘80s and ‘90s. You can find Quiet Heroes streaming on Amazon Prime. Check it out today!

Q is for QUIET HEROES! Because we made this film we pulled from our Amazon reviews to let you know how important this film is: "The story of AIDS in large urban cities has been told but this film looks at it from the microcosm of Utah. Politicians and political activists are interviewed but the main focus, justifiably, is on Dr. Kristen Ries and her PA, Dr. Maggie Snyder. Ries was intrigued by reports of a particularly virulent pneumonia that was striking gay men and her research had nher prepared when she began first seeing patients affected. Her patient list grew as did the epidemic and, as she was the only doctor in the state who would even see AIDS patients she was soon overwhelmed. (Doctors refusing AIDS patients was such a scandal the Surgeon General publicly excoriated them – President Ronald Reagan didn’t even address the epidemic until 1985). She asked, apparently chosen at random, a young nurse, “Do you want to go to PA (Physician’s /assistant) school?” That was Snyder – and that the two would also become life partners is just so cool. Hospitals, too, were turning away AIDS patients. Eventually the Sisters of the Holy Cross – nuns having more compassion for the sick and dying than doctors apparently – agreed to open their doors at a time when caring for those with AIDS meant keeping them comfortable to the end and administering lots of hugs. While Salt Lake City may be fairly cosmopolitan it was in the grip of the Mormon church whose attitude was, in the words of openly gay State Senator Jim Dabakis, “These are sinners. This is God’s revenge.” While the trifecta of directors don’t go for pushing emotional buttons you may find yourself tearing up a few times – especially when the newspaper death notices are zoomed out from and become an obituaries quilt." Quiet Heroes is available to watch on Amazon. . . . . #quietheroes #documentary #AIDSawareness
