At Vattenfall, our attitude has always been that there’s a way. Time has shown us that progress is rarely easy, but always possible – with the right mindset. So even when it feels like there’s no way, we say, there’s only no way until there is one. Post 1 out of 3. #vattenfall #theresaway #fossilfreedom

The Clashindarroch wind farm has been generating renewable electricity since 2015. Over the same period, it has delivered more than £2 million for local communities in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, through its Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.  More than 180 projects have received support – from youth groups and mental health initiatives to local schools and sports clubs. One example is No. 30 in Huntly, a former derelict building now reopened as a community-owned space with a 60-seat cinema, co-working areas, café, gallery and retail space.  This is part of our broader commitment to drive the transition to fossil free living while supporting projects and organisations in the communities where we operate.  #Vattenfall #windpower #Scotland

Each year towards the end of winter, when the snow is at its deepest, we head into the Swedish mountains to measure snow depth and density. By combining manual measurements, helicopter radar and data from remote weather stations, our hydrologists build a clearer picture of how much water is stored in the snow — and how the spring flood may unfold. These measurements form the basis for decisions on water regulation and hydropower production, long before the snow begins to melt. That long-term planning is a way to ensure a stable supply of fossil-free electricity, and more predictable energy for homes and businesses. #fossilfree #sustainability #hydropower

What happens beneath the surface when we generate electricity at sea? Together with the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology and the University of Southern Denmark, we are investigating whether harbour porpoises can detect electromagnetic fields created by subsea cables from offshore wind farms, and how they respond to them. In carefully designed research studies, trained harbour porpoises take part in experiments that use only positive reinforcement and no coercion. These studies help to better understand: – whether they can detect electromagnetic fields – how sensitive they are to these fields – whether this could affect their behaviour Over the past two decades, Vattenfall has built a leading biodiversity research program called BioWins. This in‑house R&D program goes beyond regulatory requirements, aiming to understand and mitigate the impacts of wind and solar farms on nature with scientific rigor. Vattenfall’s dedicated Bioscience Team of environmental experts provides evidence‑based guidance on biodiversity risks and opportunities, drawing on more than 60 collaborative scientific research projects conducted in close partnership with leading universities, NGOs and researchers. The research provides valuable insights into potential impacts and helps guide the sustainable design, development, and operation of wind farms. #Vattenfall #windpower #theresaway

A diverse energy system is a resilient energy system. Hydro, nuclear, wind and solar – combined in a diverse and decentralised mix. When production is spread out, disruption in one place does less damage overall. In a new report, Eurelectric looks at how Europe can strengthen resilience in uncertain times. Crisis teams, shared information and stockpiled equipment are part of the answer – but so is how we design the system itself. Renewable energy is not only about reducing emissions. It strengthens energy security by relying on resources we have here in Europe – the wind, the sun and the water. #vattenfall #fossilfree #theresaway

Together with our partners at @ssab , we’re building the single largest component produced with close to zero carbon dioxide emissions in iron production. In 2028, we will install a 120 tonne dam gate in the Stornorrfors hydropower plant in northern Sweden – a proof of concept, using hydrogen reduced sponge iron based on our HYBRIT® technology. Using this technology to manufacture the gate is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by 200 tonnes, compared to traditional steel production.    It’s a full circle moment: fossil-free electricity powering the production of fossil-free steel – used for fossil-free hydropower.    This is an important step towards a society where it’s possible to move, make and live fossil free.      #Vattenfall #fossilfree #theresaway

Is it possible to make cement with near-zero CO2 emissions? Through a collaboration with Cemvision, we support development of a new type of cement that could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional cement. To cut carbon emissions from the energy system, we must also cut the emissions from the materials it is built with. At our research and development center in Sweden, we are exploring initiatives like this and more to reduce environmental impact while supplying an increasing amount of fossil free electricity to Northern Europe.   #vattenfall #cement #theresaway

Conventional cement makes up around 8% of the world's total CO2 emissions – making our buildings, roads and infrastructure a big contributor to climate change. Our partner Cemvision is making cement with up to 95% lower CO2 emissions by using recycled materials and fossil free electricity from Vattenfall. Through an agreement with Cemvision, Vattenfall will be using near-zero-carbon emission cement in energy infrastructure projects across Europe from 2028. #Vattenfall #theresaway #fossilfree

At Vattenfall, we’re working for a future where we can all choose fossil free ways to move, make and live. Fossil free electricity, power from wind, solar, hydro and nuclear, is at the heart of our commitment. Our goal is to be free of fossil fuels in our own primary electricity and heat production by 2040. This means expanding our generation of fossil free electricity, supporting electric transport infrastructure and helping industrial partners shift from fossil fuels to fossil free solutions. #Vattenfall #theresaway

At Vattenfall, our attitude has always been that there’s a way to take on even the toughest challenges. Whether it’s building massive hydro power plants in extremely remote areas more than a hundred years ago, being part of enabling fossil free steel, or building the world’s largest offshore wind farm at the time, we know that there’s a way to do things that once seemed impossible. In fact, progress is happening all around us every day. Fossil free technologies already exist and are improving all the time. So even when it feels like there’s no way to leave fossil fuels behind, at Vattenfall we say, there’s only no way, until there is one. With fossil free electricity, there’s a way. #Vattenfall #theresaway
