Meet UK-based illustrator, Vatsalya Goyal – this week’s Spotlight creative from the CLIP community!
Their deeply personal project ‘Kiki’ explores queerness as both resistance and joy. Rooted in lived experience as a queer artist and person of colour, the work draws inspiration from the Kiki ballroom scene as a space where queer youth reclaim agency, build chosen families, and celebrate identities often silenced in mainstream culture.
Working fluidly between traditional and digital media, Vatsalya begins with raw, tactile experimentation – jotting ideas across sheets of paper using charcoal, pencil, marker and spray – before scanning and refining the work digitally in Procreate.
Through Kiki, Vatsalya uses illustration to spark dialogue, foster connection, and create visuals that feel both intimate and empowering.
