Van grew up in Salinas, California — the lettuce capital of the world, as he'll proudly tell you — dreaming about cartoons and comic books.
That dream didn't stay a dream.
When Van graduated from @loyolamarymount he sold his senior thesis project.
Not shelved it.
Not submitted it for a grade and moved on.
Sold it!!! 🤑
That project became Johnny Bravo — five seasons on Cartoon Network, a character that became a genuine piece of animation history, and a career that was launched before the ink on his diploma was dry.
If you've ever looked at something you made for a class and wondered could this be something real — Van is living proof that the answer can be YES!! 🙌🏼
Since then he's developed and produced original material at Film Roman, Walt Disney Television Animation, Fox Kids, NBC, and Cartoon Network Asia. He directed on Pete the Cat for Amazon Prime and Wolfboy and the Everything Factory for Apple TV+.
He's taught character development and animation production at LMU and Cal State Fullerton, because he's never stopped believing that the next great idea might be sitting in a student's sketchbook right now.
His Filipino-American perspective also inspired the 2002 award-winning feature film The Debut — because Van has always understood that the most original stories come from the most specific lives.
He's joining the faculty at Animated 🐵 U because he remembers exactly what it felt like to be at the beginning.
And he wants you to know that the project you're working on right now — the one that feels small, unfinished, maybe even just an assignment — could be the thing that changes everything.
It was for him.
