Shifting the vanishing point.
Tilt-shift lenses allow image makers to shift the vanishing point and place it at the focal point of the image. The inspiration comes from one point perspective paintings of the Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age. It’s the concept I discuss in the second part of my BA theory paper.
The painting, “Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid” was pained by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer.
Filming 16mm Grain Plates
We used the Arriflex 416 Plus, shot on 7207, used two SkyPanel S60-Cs and some diffusion grids + floppies. We had a 858D and 800C on hand aswell. The focus calibration of the lens to the camera was a bit off.
Do the spiky SPDs of the LEDs lead to less pleasing results, honestly idk, but the grain plates work great for me. We shot about 40seconds per plate going from EV -4,-2,0+2,+4. Also did some halation tests and then used the remaining couple feet to film us doing random things.

Beach vlog on A7III through my 16mm pipeline without any grading. It’s all just backlight and beautiful people.
The Pipeline:
- The PFE LUT is sadly still from filmbox
My own algorithm and gizmos include:
- Grain (using 5 different 16mm plates that I shot)
- Halation
- Gateweave
- Desat + other color adjustments (but they operate in the Reauleux opponent color space made by CalvinSilly and Hotgluebanjo)
- Geometric lens distortion
- Lens astigmatism
- Light bleed effect from adjacent frames, but that one’s a self assembled copy based on calvinsillys version
