sorry for all the gig spam but - it all starts today! I haven’t seen our friends the Forty Drop Few since we visited them in Portland OR (where Ashley took this tintype!). We have an album coming out on Jalopy Records , so we’re celebrating the release of that - I will have copies at our shows! We are playing Nashville Friday (TODAY) 4/24 Spencer Connell Guitar Repair with the Pontoon Serenaders, Louisville Saturday 4/25 Maybe Its Fate with Heather Summers , a house show in Bloomington IN Sunday 4/26 with our friends the Ditch Tea Steepers, and Friday and Saturday May 1st and 2nd as part of the Asheville Shellac Bash . 5/2 will be a patio show The Grey Eagle . Message me if you want more details for any of those shows. I’m looking forward to playing music I rarely get to play and seeing lots of friends!

Today we took advantage of the wine cellar acoustics to record a little - this is Sufrimento from Johnny Perry’s Instrumental Trio, recorded in 1932. I read they were the first Cape Verdean band to record an album in the US, as Johnny Perry’s Portuguese Criolo Trio (1929). In later recordings they also went by Johnny Perry’s Capeverdean Serenaders.

I’m excited to be heading out on a little run down the east coast with @rachel.meirs and @maxwellpoulos as Vaiano’s Paisanos.
Maxwell and Rachel are two of my favorite folks to play with. They’re both total shredders and have excellent taste in tunes. We’ve been working on a set of Italian mazurkas, Mexican polkas, Antillean waltzes, a Russian march by way of Cape Verde, etc, and I’m excited to see it all come together as we get out this week and start playing.

Had a lot of fun working up some fiddle tunes from Cape Verde with @rachel.meirs for a short set we played in Louisville last night! Here’s some of ‘Masurka Do Meu Pao’ from Abrew’s Portuguese Instrumental Trio.
Ali and I are excited to be playing at Appalshop’s Seedtime on the Cumberland next Friday evening in Whitesburg, KY. It should be a nice program of blues, fiddle tunes, some nice old time country guitar duets, and who knows what else. This is “Just Pickin’”, learned from Roy Harvey and Leonard Copeland’s wonderful 1929 recording. Ali will also be performing with a fully-configured 4 piece version of the Hillbuddies. They play at 5, and we play at 7. Come thru if you feel so inclined!
