This week is Emergency Service Dispatchers and 9-1-1 Awareness Week 📞 From April 12–18, we recognize the voices behind every call, the calm, skilled professionals who guide our crews before we even arrive. At Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, every response starts with our emergency communications partners. Their quick thinking, clear direction, and steady presence help ensure we reach those in need safely and efficiently. This week, we thank the call takers, dispatchers, and support teams who are there in every critical moment, often unseen but never unnoticed. #911AwarenessWeek #911BC #VancouverFire #VFRS #PublicSafety

Happy Vaisakhi 🌾 This week, we reflect on Vaisakhi, first celebrated in 1699 with the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh, marking a community built on courage, equality, and service. Sikhs have been part of British Columbia since the late 1800s, helping shape Vancouver’s history, from the opening of the first Gurdwara in 1908 to ongoing efforts for equality and community support. Today, that spirit continues, with Sikh members serving across all parts of our city, including right here in Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. We hope everyone who celebrated had a safe and joyful Vaisakhi. #Vaisakhi #VancouverFire #VFRS #StrongerTogether #ServeWithPride

A huge thank you to the Vancouver Canucks and the Canucks for Kids Fund for their incredible generosity and support. We are truly grateful for their commitment to the health and well-being of at-risk children in our community. This support, delivered through Vancouver Fire Charities, will make a meaningful and lasting difference for so many kids. Vancouver Fire Charities exists because Vancouver Fire Fighters show up for their community every single day — not just on emergency calls, but through programs that directly support children and families. Programs like Snacks for Kids, which helps ensure vulnerable children have access to healthy snacks at school, are a powerful reminder that community care is part of the fire service mission. When kids’ basic needs are met, they’re better able to learn, grow, and thrive. Our firefighters had an amazing time last night, and we’re proud to stand alongside the Vancouver Canucks as we work together to uplift our community’s most precious resource — our children. @Canucks @CanucksForKids @VancouverFireCharities @VanFireRescue

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services was honoured to welcome Her Honour Wendy Cocchia, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, to Firehall 2. We had meaningful conversations around inclusion, including Autism Awareness training for first responders, and firefighter health and safety related to occupational risks such as cancer and PTSD. Firehall 2 is one of the busiest halls in North America, and our crews continue to serve with professionalism and dedication every day. Thank you to Her Honour Wendy Cocchia for visiting and recognizing our members, and thank you to the City for its continued support of the vital work we do to keep our community safe. 🚒 #fireservice #firefighters #FirstResponders #PublicSafety #Vancouver

On Tuesday, Nov 21st, firefighters responded to the most overdoses in department history for a single day: 54. ⁣ VFRS averaged 16 overdoses/day in May and it has jumped significantly lately and during income assistant week where firefighters averaged 45 overdoses/day last week. ⁣ ⁣ Firefighters at firehall 2 responded to record levels of calls including set fires & fire alarms. Calls exceeded 80 per day for the single firehall often requiring additional firehalls to assist in the DTES from the significant amount of life threatening calls. ⁣ Last week there were 452 emergency calls into firehall 2's district, compared to 229 last year during the same period. ⁣ 9 years after the opioid emergency was declared, so many individuals, families, communities and first responders continue to be impacted daily from direct harms and downstream effects. ⁣ Due to the exposure to extreme levels of human suffering, firefighters are limited to 81 shifts at firehall 2 to try and limit compassion fatigue. This week, firefighters continue to respond to an unprecedented amount of overdoses and emergencies to try and help this crisis as much as possible.
