We have truly lost an art legend and a wonderful loving intelligent intuitive person. The first woman to win an Oscar for Hair and Make Up (Quest for Fire 1981) a second was for Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992). Many more accolades, but this is just a sample. I am so grateful. She was my mentor and my friend, and the world has a hole in it, including mine, without her. Love you. Xxx

Hello, I’m Vanessa B. Lee (last pic).
I’m applying for the Last Looks mentorship program because I deeply value learning, and would love to be an official mentor someday, in an industry I’ve always felt passionate about.
As a Make Up Artist originating from the UK, I’ve worked mainly in the USA and been a proud Union member of IASTE 706, since 2016. I’ve had many roles, from assisting, to working on large teams, to HoD in small productions. My education and healthcare professional backgrounds have allowed me to be a consultant for health & safety in our industry during Covid, and a product developer for a color cosmetics brand. I also enjoy contributing to published Industry articles and podcasts.
As artists, our planning and executing process, technique, critical eye, problem solving and the emotive and cognitive energy we bring, is what makes our work shine. That’s a lot to give! When work is often first, and investment is second, I know this mentorship would offer a rare and precious opportunity. For me, I feel that having a well-rounded, open-minded, straight talking mentor, who has current technical solutions, as well as people and management skills along with career longevity... this would boost my confidence and strategy to move forward into larger projects, refine and extend my skill set (esp hair). As you can see from my work, I like the colorful and painterly, but I also love immersive period work and subtle realism.
With my background, I really honor the care and boundaries needed to work with performers and teams to tell a story. It’s another care industry. I also feel strongly about taking care of ourselves and as a community- mentorship is part of that. I appreciate the less celebrated “unspoken” skills that our industry requires, and I would want to develop that as a career angle.
So, kind generous mentors, if you’re looking for an artist who is more intermediate, slightly mature, young at heart, with a different professional background & set of skills, who loves learning, makes a fab cuppa tea, relishes research or a creative challenge, and who dreams in color… if so, I promise… I will gladly do the work with you.
