To my mum and mothers -
I am the luckiest girl. My mother left her country and traveled across the world for her family - for a better life for her children, for freedoms, for growth, for love. I can’t imagine doing it all alone. Far from your own mother and family, with expensive calls home, learning and pushing and struggling in a new land. Thank you for my life. My values, my interests - my future, is all from you. You taught me everything I know and believe, from how to walk, to how to read, to how to begin again alone in a new land. You’ve poured yourself into your children, your very health, your passion, your dreams, your firey spirit.
You always said that when you couldn’t be there, someone else would be my mother, and you were right- I have so many mothers now, in this continuing tapestry of womanhood and belonging.
Laura, my mountain-west mom, who hosted Easter gatherings, ski weekends, and visited me in all my homes and places. Sally, who cares for me like her own daughter, sharing her home, her family and her love from university till today. Michelle, my Portland mom, who did all the quintessential mother-daughter things, like teaching me about wine, grocery shopping, packing me chicken croissant sandwiches, even loaning me gambling money 🤭 Brindha, my international mom, welcoming me always, making me Pimm’s cup, talking about life and stress and boys, caring for my health, shopping for wedding sarees in India and always listening. And Shirley, my mother-in-law, who raised a great son and has been so kind and welcoming.
I feel so lucky and blessed to be surrounded by these strong incredible women. Who have lived and shared so much of themselves and their lives and homes and hearts with me. Happy Mother’s Day to you all 🤍
