It's finally #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek! It's been a little while since we did a video like this, and a few new rescued otters have joined us at the aquarium since then — so whether you're here for the first time or just need a refresher, it's time to Meet the Otters.

The eponymous tail of the spiny-tailed monitor can be twice the length of its abdomen! The ridged tail can be wedged into rock crevices to prevent the monitor from being pried out by potential predators. Find this lizard and much more in our limited-time Dragons exhibit!

Week 2 of my @churchill_trust was spent @vanaqua and @vammrs with the amazing @madmartygan7 Despite it being their low season for rescue work, I was still able to take away plenty of learnings including facility design, team structure and insights into managing both a for profit and non for profit aspect of marine veterinary medicine. Thank you Dr Marty, the veterinary teams at VAMMR and VanAq and the amazing marine mammal teams for giving me your time this week. Come visit Australia anytime

May 10 is National Shrimp Day! The terms shrimp and prawn are often conflated, and are sometimes used to refer to the same animals — confusingly, the spot prawn belongs to the infraorder Caridea, the "true shrimp". A commonly harvested shrimp in British Columbia, BC spot prawns are a sustainable seafood choice!

During a routine weigh session this week, male Steller sea lion Kenai hit his heaviest weight yet, tipping the scales at 940 kg (over 2000 lbs)! Adult male Stellers are at their heaviest during the spring and can reach weights of over 1100 kg as they prepare to compete with other males for territory on breeding rookeries. Check out a sea lion training session next time you visit — you might see Kenai break another record!

In early June, sea otters Hardy, Mak, Quatse, and Taz will be transferred to @aquariumduqc , supporting the opening of the aquarium’s new sea otter habitat and creating space at the Vancouver Aquarium to care for future rescued otters. Guests are invited to visit the otters on weekends before May 31.
